Love this episode. The long continuous shot is great.
This show is awesome at realistic characters. There's very few black hatted villains or angelic righteous heroes. Mostly it's people like Olly, Jon, and Egret just trying to do what they think is best. Sometimes the character you like does something you hate or the character you hate really comes through and saves the day.
Many of the main characters confound expectations but when you do encounter actual villains in this show you really really hate them.

Thank you for all of this!! The Neck was a bit confusing, but this totally makes sense. I also love the idea of a castle that moves around... so spooky and fun.

Some of the best shots the boom one shot inside was awesome and then the shot before the battle from the Wildlings camp up over the wall.

Man what an episode. I love when they do these 'set-piece' episodes like this and Blackwater (2x9). I think what I love the most about battles in ASOIAF/Game of Thrones is that you are almost always invested in both sides and that's also what makes them so nerve wracking!
I can't believe you guys didn't remember that Maester Aemon is a Targaryen! That's the best scene in season one! (Just joking, it is actually one of my favourite scenes in season one but it is one of those things that is very easy to forget your first time through when you are being bombarded with information.)
Just because you guys were talking about it during the intro, Moat Cailin is in an area called the Neck, which is a fairly narrow and swampy part of land that separates the North from the South. Any Southern Army that wants to invade the North has to pass through the Neck, and go through the chokehold at Moat Cailin, making it a very strategically valuable castle. The Reeds, like Meera and Jojen who are with Bran, are also from the Neck but from a place called Greywater Watch, a castle that supposedly moves around the swamp somehow, making it impossible to accurately map.
About the helmets, IKR! I know they want you to be able to see the actors faces and all that but no one ever wears a damn helmet in this show! No wonder they all die... lol

I don't know if you knew but John and Ygritte are married in real life!
