I made a port of Xixit

Well, I was about half way done with a different video, then got hung up waiting for some parts, so I shifted gears over and finished this one.  Working on subtitles now..

Well, for any large project, assembly is going to be easier. With BASIC you are stuck using the traditional line-number system, which gets very cumbersome after your program gets so long. That being said, I have plans to develop a better BASIC environment that will work more like a text editor, and eliminate line numbers in favor of labels.

Great 😊 I am a noob at programming and I get that many tools are still missing, but how is assembly dev on the machine compared to basic? Can you stick to the X16?

Ulrik Hansen

Gravity force would be a piece of cake. The X16 is just as powerful as most 16 bit machines, so there isn’t a lot of optimization needed to do most games of that era.

The 8-Bit Guy

Great result. Very exciting. Does it require lots of workarounds to match a 16-bit game? Optimization tricks? I mean, the way that modern C64 games appear a bit more modern. Finer detail in collision. Inertia. I wonder if an Amiga game like Gravity Force could be done on the X16? It's one of my favorites that I have for a long time wanted to use to learn programming/game design.

Ulrik Hansen

This makes me excited to be able to get my hands on an X16 when it's ready for general purchase.

I doubt that was the case. I added it to a playlist for my homebrew game development series. Youtube is weird. If somebody watches one of those videos, it will pop up as the next video even though it is unlisted. But I like to go ahead and add them to playlists so I don't forget, even if it means a dozen people or so end up seeing it early.

Very nice, I always enjoy your developer insight videos!

André Scheffler

Ah, ok - thanks for the info.

Michael Wehr

Amazing love the port and also an amazing job in doing it so quickly!

Pietro Zuco

Actually, I think it does. If you just let it sit at the menu for a bit, it will show the high scores.

The 8-Bit Guy

Btw - I think Future Crew also worked on a game that was eventually transformed into Epic Pinball

I just googled the original version and played it online in a browser. What I can't believe that the original does not have any high score table at all. You could see your score while playing but when you die it's gone. Weird. I made games back then and a highscore table was ALWAYS important. Even an online highscore table was not that rare at least in the late 90s. But none at all is something else. But from a technical standpoint it's an impressive game and your version is also very impressive from what I saw in the video.

It's on hiatus. The room where we usually film that is currently filled with arcade machines. Once the arcade opens and we can move those out of there, then we can have our room back.

The 8-Bit Guy

Nice looking game, a job well done 👍 On another topic: the geekbits podcast project is still ongoing or did it end?

Hugo Cardozo

Seriously impressive work David! This looks like it really turned out well. I enjoyed hearing you decision making process on trade offs and improvements you made to the port.

Jeremy Gieske

Thank you for another fun, great video!
