I think a lot of it boils down to people having no understanding of how much energy things use. For example, if you asked people which one uses more power, a toaster, a hair dryer, or an air conditioner, they'd assume the air conditioner uses the most. When in fact, it uses the least.

I loved the solar episode with the window unit. I want to do the same and told a guy or two at work I’d like to have a shed with AC and lighting all off the grid. The guy said the shed roof wouldn’t be large enough to power a window AC unit. He wouldn’t back down so I just said oh ok. Not sure why people are such naysayers about something simple. But they say no with a smug attitude which is odd.

WOW martin Galaways C128 ,..he made the Brilliant Parralax Sound ..10 Minutes on some KB of space ,..this is great Man ..

Dirk Crossi

Valid thoughts. I haven‘t tried it myself, but it‘s easy to try and comes at next to no cost

The 8-Bit Theory

Hi Martin. Yes, I've been seeing the stories about this for about 10 years. I'm not really convinced, to be honest. I've read a number of articles debunking this idea, and based on the laws of thermodynamics, I tend to agree. If you are in a confined space such as a room, all of the heat from the candles will stay in that room regardless. Granted, if you are sitting right next to the clay pot then you might benefit a little from radiant heat on your body. But as for just heating a room, I'm not sure there'd be any benefit.

The 8-Bit Guy

Ad heating with candles. Google for „clay pot heating“. that distributes heat from candles even better.

Well, the EUV is my wife's car. She traded in her 2019 Bolt for it nearly a year ago when they first came out. It has not had the battery replaced yet, though. She likes it. Far more affordable than most similar products. We have even taken it on a few long trips with no issues. As for my Volt. Yes, I had a Gen-1 Volt, and a white Gen-2, and now I have a red 2019. I've got all of the upgrades the 2019 had, such as faster charging, power seats, etc. It's really a great car and a pity it was discontinued early.

Yeah, arcade shooters are the worst, ESPECIALLY Asteroids. (haha, purely kidding). Side note: Actually, my favorite Colecovision game was Space Fury, which I now see is sort of an upgraded version of Asteroids.

I think the largest number of blackouts I've encountered were from freezing rain.

Speaking of EV stuff, how are you and Ms. 8-Bit liking the Bolt EUV so far? Also my memory might be faulty but did you get a different Gen 2 Volt? Suppose you could do a state of the fleet video update if you wanted to, wasn't sure if the Bolt upgrade had anything to do with the high voltage battery recall.

The US is a bit unique re: how many tornadoes we get... there are large swathes of the globe where it's just not a thing that happens. I don't care what your infrastructure is made of, if a silo lands on it it's going to break.

moosemaimer

I think what we see here is a clash of expectations, partly because of reasons you mentioned.

DoktorNo

I still think that's such a gross overgeneralization - first off in 2021 89% of games sold were sold digitally so there's no box with manual anymore, second what's better, a printed manual that you have to stop playing your game to read, or a game that shows you what to do in context, when you need it?

Gargaj

Your recollection about figuring out games in the past... I has similar experience. In early 1990's computer magazines were full of tips, cheats and walk-throughs and that was a relief for kids like me back then. And yes, I share your thought about ppl being impatient nowadays.

DoktorNo

RTFM :-P Looking forward to the cool stuff you mentioned in the end.

MrHammond

I really liked the solution you used. I really don't want to have to maintain a gas/diesel generator and cycling gas cans to keep gas/diesel relatively fresh, either. My only concern with the battery systems is the life of the batteries. I assume I will have to swap batteries every few years (or will they last longer than, say, UPS batteries?)

SuperTekBoy

I loved playing Impossible Mission when I was a kid in the 80s. I did not have the manual either. One time I collected all of the puzzle pieces but I had no clue what to do with them. It wasn’t until the early aughts that I found out what to do and beat the game on an emulator.
