I think you are using a small-sensor camera with relatively big F number lens, hence the large depth-of-field (DoF). Large DoF makes everything in focus, so there is no separation between foreground and background.
If you are using a changeable lens camera, then you may use a lens with small F number, below 2. This will make the background blurry and gives the required separation between you and that "busy" wall.
