Sinclair C5 video delayed.. in the meantime enjoy this.

I got my Sinclair C5 a little over a week ago, but it looks like UPS through it off of a 2 story building.  It has significant damage and will seriously delay the video I was planning because I'm having to repair it and order parts.  I've also started two other videos, which will probably wind up being done before the C5 video.  But nothing is close to being done at the moment.

So, in the meantime, you might like this video I did with E for Electric.  We filmed this last week.  This is actually just the 1st half of a two-part series we filmed.  I basically explain how I rent out my cars on Turo and all of that.  Some of you might find it interesting.  What I didn't mention in the video is that COVID-19 has more or less destroyed my Turo business and I've sold off most of the cars.  The only one I have left that I rent out is the Tesla Model-3.

I did some looking and it appears that the EV drivers charge at the commuter train or subway station parking lots - they drive there in the morning, plug in, and their car is charged when they get off the train after work. Sadly, since I drive all the way in (ironically I work AT the train station but have to park at the yard) there is no place for me to plug in. Ironically, despite the high cost of power in New England, where I live, the power is as stable as an original Commodore 64 “brick” power supply. So it looms like I will be buying gas for a bit longer. At least the gas engines are pretty good in the smaller cars!

Well, if you aren't able to charge at home, the numbers probably won't work in the favor of an EV or PHEV. Regular charging at public stations is usually inconvenient and expensive. If you can charge at home, then the numbers will probably make sense.

I rented a prius once for a road trip - it was decent on gas but seemed to have no acceleration on the highway, I been considering a Tesla or a Volt for my next car but I don't know where the charging stations are (we don't have any at work). It would be interesting to "run the numbers" to compare the cost of buying gas vs. the cost of electricity - I live in New England, where we have supposedly the most expensive electric rate in the country... Also, comparing the convenience and speed of filling up the tank versus the quick-charge options.

Oh yeah, I remember about the Fiat. But sorry to hear about the Prius. I hope things turn out for the better when you go back on Turo. Sending my love from Israel.

Well, it wasn't quite that straight forward. The Prius Prime ended up getting wrecked and totalled. I gave the Fiat 500e to my daughter when she got her driver's license. And I sold the BMW i3. So, at this point I have a Tesla and a Volt I can rent out. I'm actually thinking of trading in the Tesla on perhaps two cheaper cars since the Tesla has always disappointed on Turo and it's a far more expensive car than I would have ever bought for myself. So, yes, I want to continue doing Turo but it's pretty much dead at the moment.

The 8-Bit Guy

That won’t be a problem once all that money from the Nigerian prince comes through :))

Oliver Baumann

Wow, how did you calculate the value of selling them off vs. just holding out till the pandemic is (mostly) over? When things go back to normal, do you think you'll buy new cars to rent out on Turo, or do you feel like you've had enough of it?

Asaf Sagi

Where do you keep your massive yachts, though?

Asaf Sagi

Senator, we run ads

Asaf Sagi

I know the ads are nothing to do with the creators, and the YouTube picks are weird sometimes. At the moment I’m plagued by particularly graphics ads for earwax removal products. They’re so gross!

What a neat concept! We have some share car schemes here in AU but they woudn't ever get a free car out of it, let alone an electric one. Yearly registration costs a rich $850 inc an incredibly limited compulsory third party injury insurance. Fuel and eletricity in particular are also prohibitively expensive $1.40/ 40c/KWh. And to come to think of it, I've NEVER seen a single EV charging station in Melbourne, Our prime minister is famous for kissing a piece of coal.

I had a work buddy who I kept trying to convince could get a brand new car for free. He drove about 150mi round trip to work every day in a 15 mpg SUV. I worked out the cost of gas he was paying and he could have made the monthly payments on a brand new Leaf for the amount of money he was spending on gas every month with plenty left over to pay for the additional cost of electricity. Even a prius+a little bit of gas would have been cheaper.

Pre Roll ads are absolutely nothing to do with the creator. If you don't like the ads you are seeing then you need to either use some fairly sophisticated ad-blocking software for clients or on the network or stop watching content which is polarized.

It's an interesting idea. I never even heard of this service. It would have possibly saved my bacon when I was in a remote area with no rental companies nearby. Plus with the opportunity to try out an electric car - it would be hard to pass up. I may end up trying this option sometime soon. Thanks!

I get all my free cars by clicking on the links in flashing pop-up windows :)

Oliver Baumann

I thought about doing it, but Turo forbids to rent any Tesla car in UK :(

Alessandro Monopoli

UPS (pronounce like in German) did it again... Interesting video, even if I'm not a car driver and not interested in cars at all. I'm curious about the stories from the people that refuse the car because it's electric: my father also has an electric car, and we were also a bit supprized that some people where so sceptical about the opportunities to charge. And the bureaucratic problems he had to lay a cable for a charging station in his garage...

We only renew our plates every 10 years in Texas. We do pay a yearly registration fee. It’s usually about $70 per car and based on weight I think.

The 8-Bit Guy

Oh yeah, youtube has ads. Haven't noticed for years. ;) https://adblockplus.org/

Travis Snoozy

Neat video. What happens if the car is damaged? I was also wondering how much it costs for the plates in Texas, and it looks very affordable at around $50/year. Even if you had 4 or 5 vehicles, the yearly license plate renewal would be below what a single vehicle costs in some states.

Off and running! 8 Bit Guy’s channel is a no BS zone. I’m not speaking for him, but I’m pretty sure I’m right. LOL

I typically watch YouTube on Roku. For a long time there weren't may ads but lately they have stepped them up. On that platform I can usually just jump back and then play again and it will play with out the ad. I was on the computer and saw the email that there was an update so I clicked over. BIG MISTAKE. I am not a huge fan of the current administration but I also feel that bread lines, storm trooper security and basic oppression aren't all that wonderful either.

Jon Christensen

You can go to https://adssettings.google.com and see what categories google thinks you are interested in and make changes there which is supposed to affect what kind of ads you get on youtube as well.

Lennart Sorensen

Oh yeah youtube has ads. After two years of using youtube premium I usually forget about that unless I see youtube on someone else's system and you get hit with the flood of ads. :)

Lennart Sorensen

I have always strived to keep my channel free of politics, religion, or anything else that sparks controversy. But you do sound pretty politically polarized. So even if you watch videos tailored to your political side, youtube may simply label those videos as “political” and you may get ads for stuff like that even if they are advertising to the other side.

The 8-Bit Guy

Then it doesn't work! I am not blind to what is happening in the world and do not frequent channels that support that world view. I was very surprised by it and disappointed that such content was making it to your channel. America has its problems, anarchy followed by communisms is not the answer. Just look to Germany, Russia, and currently Venezuela. Sorry if this is all way off topic but I see bad thing happening around me and felt I needed to speak up.

Jon Christensen

Hi Jon. I have no control over the ads played in front of my videos. That is entirely up to YouTube. Also, they may be tailoring ads directly for you based on other things that you watch.

The 8-Bit Guy

I really like your channel. I am fond of the the tech you look at both old and new. I also think you have a great personality and I always look forward to your new episodes. How ever there is a BIG,BBBIIIGGG PROBLEM with your pre-roll ads. I don't know what your politics are but I DO NOT APPRICATE COMMUNISTS PARTY PROPOGANA being force feed at me when I want to just watch one of your tech videos. The people behind these political ads are only trying to sew distrust, anger, confusion and despair and bring anarchy to the my good, peaceful American neighbors. Please reconsider your options for funding before I and my fellow Americans find it necessary to pull the Patreon funding. I live in a very pleasant middle class multi-etheric neighborhood and I would like to keep it that way.
