First I feel your pain about the barking dog, we have a neighbour with a young (under 1 year old chihuahua) that barks at everything. Worst thing is I have never seen it out for a walk and instead the owners have made a little pen for it outside their house. It can see onto the street and barks at everything that goes past. As someone who also has a young dog it's so irritating as I have been putting in so much effort to train mine and would be so embarrassed if she barked loads! I have loved the natural history eps, my partner and I did 23 and me and his came back saying he has 72% more Neanderthal DNA than other users where as I have 13%. A fact which he loves to brag about for some reason. Also you mentioned otters are so cute and I don't want to have to ruin them for you too but if you Google otters are bastards the cuteness will likely be dispelled. Cannot wait for the 10 years younger parody! What a toxic show that was, I loved watching it as a kid though😂 Ps I cracked up at the line 'Nova puts her giant misshapen head on the pillow and starts snoring immediately'.

The last I heard they were still wheeling Dragon's Eye out in 2014, but my primary school were cheapskates! Rant ahead! With regards to Neanderthals, I think a lot of the documentaries are probably a bit out of date. As we've learned more about them over the last decade, we've found they were much more like us than anyone thought- they had art, sophisticated language and even shared the same FOXP2 gene that gives us our linguistic capabilities. More and more, it looks like Homo Sapiens survived through chance, rather than us being "better" than them- quite a crippling blow to the egos of many early palaeo-anthropologists. Much of our conception of early human species has been filtered through the eyes of early academics who believed in White Exceptionalism, and tried very hard to posit white people as more evolved- and thus better- than other races. This is the genesis of many modern concepts of Homo Sapiens as being better than neanderthals. Ultimately it's an outgrowth of racism in academia, especially in the 20th century. Anthropology has a very dark past with regards to eugenics, phrenology and white supremacy- as the study of Humans, it's often co-opted by people attempting to justify their own biases. Scientists are just people and people have limitations and prejudices, which often get interwoven into the science- a great example of this is the Piltdown Man, an obvious hoax that many respectable academics supported for years as it propped up their view of white people being a different species to black, asian and native americans. Our view of human nature is heavily skewed by the time period we live in, and many famous anthropologists lived immediately after WW1 + WW2, so they believed violence was an intrinsict part of human behaviour. This is the root of the common misconception that we "did away with" or committed violence against archaic human species. In fact we interbred with them! Homo Denisova (another sister species to ourselves) genes remain in many people of Polynesian and Aboriginal Australian descent, and Denisovan genes allow native tibetans to thrive in extreme altitudes.
