If you want to check out more Superman I suggest Superman & Lois it’s series about well it’s it title it’s also on Max fantastic show imo actor that plays him Tyler Hoechlin arguably best Superman since Christopher Reeve

Now that you've fallen for the charms of Christopher Reeve you should watch Somewhere in Time (1980); big departure from Superman but he's awesome there as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somewhere_in_Time_(film)

I like the movie a lot still, but once you know the backstory about how they were filming both the 1st and 2nd movie at the same time (until they halted production on the 2nd to focus on finishing the 1st) and the problems that arose when Donner was fired (like Gene Hackman refusing to film anymore scenes) added with the reshots / alternate scenes the new director did... Well it's hard not to notice the film is sort of Frankenstein'd together.

I love it. I’m watching it right now. Addie says poor guy. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. I think to myself…. The moon.?

Richard Lester certainly amped up the slapstick (though still not as much as he would in "Superman III"), but still generally feels in the same spirit as the first one (I suppose it helps that a good portion of it was filmed simultaneously with the first movie). As much as I concur that the Donner Cut does some things better, I still prefer the theatrical cut by hair, mostly because I feel it handles 2 crucial plot points better: Superman's decision regarding becoming mortal, and the ending (reusing a significant plot point from the end of the first one just kind of cheapens it, IMO). Unfortunately, it's pretty much impossible to create a definitive cut from both versions without it having some glaring continuity errrors. 🤔

Superman Returns is a better sequel to this than Superman 3 & 4 were.

Addie is Twitterpated!!! Addie is TwitterPated!!! Addie is TwitterPated!!! I first saw "Adventures of Superman" (1952) in re-runs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2l4bz1FT8U Then when I was 4 or so I saw the Superman Comics when my mom took me shopping! So I had to have them! Then "The New Adventures of Superman" cartoons by Filmation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmcwCeHxAwA Then "Super Friends" (1973) animated series came out and I was only 10 years old! lol I wanted Green Lantern on it but it never happened. But this is one of thee greatest Cartoons! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANCjrzSJOsU Then "Superman" (1978)!!! For a long time I thought George Reeves was father to Christopher Reeve LOL I liken the Superman Comics and Superman'78 to Tolkiens' LotR books and Jackson's LotR!!! Christopher Reeve brought Superman to Life! Just as Peter Jackson brought Frodo and Sam to Life! An experience that's hard to describe. What was it 1995? I saw him on TV, that hurt soo bad I can still feel it to this very day. "Life is a box of chocolates Forrest. Ya never know what ya gonna get." I am one of 8 in a blended family of 2 fathers and 4 mothers; there are only 3 of us left. Of my friends of about 10 of us; there are only 4 of us left. A very long time ago - 73? My beloved sister got me a poster: "Everything I need to know in Life I learned from Star Trek." That's not far from the truth. LOL ST: 2: The Wrath of Khan (1982): Spock: "The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few, or the one." ST: "Generations" (1994) Picard: "Cherish every moment, because they'll never come again." The 4 F's: "Family, Friends, Food & Fun!" Thee best times I've ever had has been with the 4 F's! 1968 Thanksgiving Dinner! The Family and Uncle Sammy with his wife and Daughter on leave from the Army in Germany, Uncle Leslie (recently finished his tour in Vietnam) and his wife Frieda down from AK, and Grandma Sadie from AK. I sat on the stairs, loving everyone, loving the moment with everyone home. Just like Jo "Little Women" (1994) 1:02:10! The sound track is incredible, always reminds me of home.

I'm glad your joining in with the Superman fans with these movies. I hope you check out the most recent superman projects like Superman and Lois on max, My Adventures with Superman also on max, and the new movie coming out next year! Its a good time being a Superman fan!

Spidey Productions

Having now rewatched both Superman 1 and 2 I can say that even though neither of these movies are my favorite Superman stories (my favorites would all be in the animated shows and films), Christopher Reeve is probably my favorite Superman actor. He manages to pull off both pretending to be Clark and just being Superman really well. 🙂 It also helps that Margot Kidder and Gene Hackman are pretty great in their roles too. As far as Lex Luthor goes, I really like Gene Hackman here but I think my favorite single portrayal of Lex Luthor is Jon Cryer in the Supergirl series. The Supergirl show as a whole is kind of hit or miss for me, but Cryer is fantastic as the mastermind villain who's just sixteen steps ahead of everybody else all the time and knows it. (Clancy Brown also deserves a lot of credit for playing Luthor in a lot of the original animated series work. When I picture an animated Luthor in my head he's the one that comes to mind the most.)

HEY! One of those terrorists is Uncle Vernon Dursley!!! I knew he must have had a past! No wonder he kept Harry under the stairs!

Simone's Coconut Squire

Marlon Brando wasn't in this one because he cost 3.7 MILLION dollars in '78 dollars (Plus something like 10% of the backend) of the $55 million budget. It was basically an unheard of deal at the time and they simply couldn't afford him for the sequels.

Simone's Coconut Squire

I haven't seen the theatrical cut in a long time. It's a lot sillier than I remember. But I mostly remember the Donner cut since that's the one I watch whenever I revisit Superman.

Joe Blankenship

They made Superman 3 and 4 after this. Then in 2006 Superman Returns was released that ignores the events of 3 and 4. It stars Brandon Routh and its directed by Bryan Singer. He directed many X-Men movies.

Marko T.

Did you recognise Vernon Dursley as one of the terrorists on the Eiffel Tower?

Alex Lee

I've been looking forward to this! Terry Stamp is one of my favourite actors, and his Zod should be studied by anyone who gets to play a supervillain.

Jon Anderson

Oh this is amazing!!

Addie Counts

That's great, Addie. Stay tuned for more Wicked-related questions on your upcoming December Q&A.

Alex Tan

It was INCREDIBLE!

My recording settings were funky for a couple of weeks, but we finally got it back to normal!

Addie Counts

Addie, any particular reason Thai reaction was shot and uploaded in 60fps? Not that I’m complaining. Addie Counts in twice as many frames is like watching Christopher Reeve in Superman II!

I'd also recommend "Noises Off," also featuring Michael Caine, John Ritter, and Carol Burnett.

Byrd N. Hand

A few months back I re-discovered an SNL sketch featuring Christopher Reeve where he is auditioning for "Superman: The Movie". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niiNPH64Xv4

ButtercupsTrueLove

For something different and a bit of sly fun, there's Christopher Reeve in "Deathtrap" (1982). Despite the title, it is NOT violent. Was originally a Tony-nominated stage play. And available on Prime Video!

ButtercupsTrueLove

Hey addie, after man of steel, the extended version of batman vs superman is on HBO and amazon so most people will have access to it. The extended verison of that movie adds a lot more context and character development. Most people who enjoy batman vs superman prefer the extended anyway.

Thats MR. Baldamort

disagree. It's pretty mixed but most people i know who enjoy superman also enjoy man of steel. Yall give this movie too much crap and it's far from the worst super hero movie from DC

Thats MR. Baldamort

I was thinking for a second and removed the "hot take" at the beginning, since I was like, "Wait... Is this really a hot take?" lol

LittleGalaxyBoy

Not really a hot take; I think a lot of people feel that way, especially older fans.

Byrd N. Hand

It’s even funnier when you realize that Jor-El invented flying cars on Krypton. They were called "The Jor-El," named after its inventor, much like how we associate Henry Ford with the invention of the automobile. So... Ursa my be living under a crystal rock lol

LittleGalaxyBoy

I hope you'll maybe watch the Donner Cut as a Patreon exclusive one day. It's not a fully complete work like this version, but it *does* definitely do a few things better: maintaining the contuinuity of Jor-El conversing with Superman at the Fortress of Solitude (instead of his mother), the scene in which Lois officially learns that Clark is Superman (though it's largely cobbled together from screen test footage), and showing how Superman regains his powers (and, more significantly, the price at which it comes). The slapstick in the confrontations with the 3 Kryptonians is also toned down quite a bit. Of course, I feel this version still does 2 crucial things better: exactly *when* Superman chooses to become mortal for Lois, and also the ending (the memory-wiping kiss *is* canon to Superman lore). On thing I've always found weird, though: in both versions, Miss Teschmacher completely disappears from the movie after her and Lex's expedition to the Fortress of Solitude. 🤔🤔 Alas, the series takes a nosedive in the third and fourth movies (as you may have noticed by how few votes "Superman III" got in your initial DC poll), getting sillier and Lois and Lex being featured less prominently (the latter not even being in the third one). Lastly, I'll just add that while much has been said about Christopher Reeve, it should be noted that Margot Kidder also had a tragic post-"Superman" existence, battling depression and mental illness for years before ultimately taking her life in 2018. 😢

Byrd N. Hand

The scene when Ursa said to Zod… “Look! They need machines to fly!” I thought to myself (in Samuel L. Jackson’s voice), “B*tch, please! You couldn’t fly back on Krypton! Don’t act like this isn’t new to you!”

Mr. Writhms

This is probably the last live-action Superman movie I actually really enjoyed. I like Superman Returns (2005) since it’s essentially a soft reboot and a sequel to Superman II, just filmed decades later with new actors. Brandon Routh might be the best modern Clark Kent/Superman, alongside Tyler Hoechlin, Routh perfectly captures the spirit of Christopher Reeve. Man of Steel (2013), the latest Superman film is very much Zack Snyder's take on Superman. The film draws heavily from Superman: Earth One, with elements of Frank Miller's Superman and the New 52, which doesn't align with my ideal version of the character. That said, it definitely has its fans, and I respect anyone who loves Man of Steel and Henry Cavill's portrayal of Superman. Cavill brought a lot to the role and deserved better movies to truly shine as the Man of Steel, ideally a proper Man of Steel 2 rather than jumping straight into a Batman v Superman film. The closest things to Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980) are Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993–1997) and Superman: The Animated Series (1996–1998), which I’d argue is the definitive take on the character. The animated series is fantastic and even features a crossover with Batman: The Animated Series, showcasing an iconic first meeting between Batman and Superman. In later episodes, when Batman goes missing, Superman travels to Gotham and temporarily takes up the mantle of Batman, teaming up with Robin to search for Bruce Wayne. My Adventures with Superman (2023), a recent animated series, is wonderful and perfectly captures the spirit and optimism of Superman. It puts a unique spin on Clark’s origin, showing him gradually unlocking his abilities while discovering slices of his origin. It’s a fantastic modern re-imagining of Superman. I’m excited for Superman (2025) since it looks like it will fully capture what I love about Superman. The timeless art direction, set designs, and background actors dressed in 1950s to 1970s clothing all point to it being a love letter to all decades of Superman. Not to mention that Metropolis is meant to be the City of Tomorrow, an Art Deco wonderland heavily inspired by the optimism of the 1950s, very Retro Futuristic. David Corenswet will no doubt nail the role of Clark Kent and Superman, Gunn's casting is always on point for his films.

LittleGalaxyBoy

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 I'm so excited for this one. This movie and the first one are my two favorites of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies. There are two of his Superman movies. You can get back to those when you decide. Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

Randee Carreno

Yay!!!!

Randolph Tirazona

Happy Monday, Addie. Your Superman journey continues with Superman II (1980). I can tell that you're still gushing over Clark Kent/Superman. BTW, how was Wicked: Part I (2024)?
