LETHAL WEAPON - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to Lethal Weapon, our first Christmas(ish) movie of the year! Gremlins was first place in the poll for the first few days, so I'll watch that one later this week. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are such a great pair in this movie! Enjoy!

LETHAL WEAPON - Full Length Reaction!

Comments

A job worth doing is worth doing well. I would finish the series.

SmooothE 🇺🇸🇺🇸

That qualifies even though only one is a cop.

Bill W

I'll throw out "48 Hours" with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy as another classic buddy cop movie from the '80s.

Byrd N. Hand

She also sang it on Letterman like 20 years in a row.

Bill W

clever!

Bill W

No, it's not a Christmas movie and neither is Die Hard, but they are two of the best action movies ever made. I'm much more of a Lethal Weapon fan than Die Hard...and I'm normally not one for sequels, but the sequels in both franchises are uncharacteristically good. You might like another buddy-cop film from 1986 called Running Scared. It stars Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. (no sequels. It was a one-and-done.) Hair looks great, btw.. 😍😍😍

Bill W

No, none of the sequels take place around the holidays.

Byrd N. Hand

And Addie will hear it again in the opening credits for "Gremlins."

Byrd N. Hand

"What's Up, Doc?" would be good, too.

Byrd N. Hand

Indeed, for as popular as the "Mad Max" series is, very few reactors seem to watch it; most of them just do "Fury Road" (which I really consider more of an in-universe spinoff than a proper sequel to the first 3) and call it a day. 🤔

Byrd N. Hand

Ahhhhh such a great Christmas song!

Addie Counts

It is a Christmas movie. The opening scene even has an unwrapped present, and snow! =P

I saw this in the theater, and I loved it so much. I have watched all four movies of the franchise a couple dozen times by now. They are just really fun, and I love the characters. I hope you enjoy the whole franchise just as much as I do. :)

Vwlss Nvwls

Addie, something else to take note is that Roger’s wife is played by singer Darlene Love who famously sings the song Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), an absolute staple Christmas song. So it’s another Christmas connection, which IMO, Lethal Weapon does way more than Die Hard.

In unrelated news, Ryan O'Neal recently passed. I'd recommend you check out Paper Moon (1973), which was a charming movie he did with his daughter Tatum.

Luis Fernandez

Just a bit of context... in the 80s, if you ran a drug operation and abducted the daughter of the cop that was trying to bust you, if you were caught you had the option to challenge that cop to a fist-fight and you would get a 15% reduction to your sentence if you won. Even if you lost the fight you'd get a coupon book that you could use in jail, so it was a good deal either way. Heh. Eric Clapton contributed to the music in this movie, which I always found weird because he was releasing some pretty big albums around this time. Could be he was on a roll and just decided it was something he was interested in doing. Gary Busey, who played Joshua, is the father of Jake Busey, who you saw in Starship Troopers.

First, I think your hair looks great straight or wavy! Just had to be said. So glad that you watched this movie! The Lethal Weapon franchise is one of the rare franchises where every one of the movies in it is good, and worth watching. I hope you'll give 2, 3, & 4 a watch after the holidays (it's been a while since I've seen 3 or 4, but I don't think any of them after 1 are set during Christmas). I'm also glad to hear you'll be watching "Gremlins." "Die Hard," "Gremlins," and "Scrooged" are the three Christmas movies me and my dad watch every Christmas Eve. You'll have seen 2/3 of them! If you squeeze "Scrooged" in there this holiday somehow, you'll be a virtual addition to our family tradition! This one, for me, is not a Christmas movie. But it's so, so close. They both have a lot of Christmas references, music, decor, and so forth. But this one is missing one thing that "Die Hard" has that puts it over the edge for me. The fact that it's Christmas is directly tied to the plot of "Die Hard." John McClaine is visiting to spend Christmas with his family, and the whole invasion of Nakatomi Plaza takes place because of the Christmas party (because the party goers are the only ones in the building due to the holiday). "Lethal Weapon" has almost all of my requirements to be a Christmas movie, except that it being Christmas has nothing to do with the plot. If you erased all the Christmas decor, changed the music, omitted carols and seasons greetings, the movie wouldn't change a bit. If you did that with "Die Hard" and just made it an average Sunday, the entire reason the story happens falls apart. Of course, as I said, this is just not a Christmas movie FOR ME. I get why some people do think it is. It really comes down to how you define a Christmas movie. And while I still sometimes get sucked into the debate of "is it or isn't it" with movies like "Lethal Weapon," "Die Hard," and "Gremlins," I'm trying to teach myself to let it go. Because really, it's kind of a silly thing to argue over. I mean if someone claims that "Jaws" is a Christmas movie, what impact does that really have on anyone's life? I'm really trying to change my instinct to argue about these things. I'll be here to watch "Gremlins" and everything else coming up this month, but I'll just say Happy Holidays to everyone now, just in case I forget for some reason later on. =)

Yes please. That's on Disney+. #OperationDumboDropForAddieCounts

If “Die Hard” can be called a Christmas movie, then “Lethal Weapon” is the same, because: 1. Christmas songs at the opening and closing credits. 2. People saying “Merry Christmas” or mentioning Christmas in the movie numerous times, even from the bad guys. 3. At the beginning, Riggs used buying a Christmas tree as a front for busting the cocaine dealers. 4. There was a scene with cops singing Christmas carols at the station. 5. Santa Claus was watching the suicide attempt from the street below (at least a guy dressed as Santa- LOL). 6. Christmas décor can be seen throughout the movie, including Riggs flying through a store window decorated with holiday lights and a sign that said “Christmas Sale” after he was blasted with a shotgun. 7. Murtaugh opened a Christmas present from his kids (a toy gun and handcuffs). 8. Riggs gives Murtaugh his hollow point bullet as a Christmas gift, wrapped in a bow. 9. At the end, they all got together for Christmas dinner, including Riggs’ dog Sam, as “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” plays into the end credits. Are there more examples that I missed? 🎄

You know what's also a good Danny Glover movie is Operation Dumbo Drop (1995).

Speaking of Richard Donner (RIP), I also suggest The Omen (1976), Superman (1978, SPECIAL EDITION), Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (2006), Inside Moves (1980), The Toy (1982), The Goonies (1985), Ladyhawke (1985), Scrooged (1988), Radio Flyer (1992), Maverick (1994), Assassins (1995), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Timeline (2003) and 16 Blocks (2006). #MoreRichardDonnerForAddieCounts

It was just a Mano a mano scene. Rorion Gracie one of the creators of the UFC was a supervisor on that fight scene showing Riggs doing a triangle choke.

Steve

Four words: "willing suspension of disbelief" 😁

Phil Stubblefield

Yes, Addie! I'm so glad you're finally getting to experience the *other* iconic action/Christmas movie! 😁 With _Lethal Weapon_ (1987) and _Die Hard_ (1988), the 1980s turned out to be the best decade for Christmas movies since the 1940s: _It's a Wonderful Life_ (1946) and _Miracle on 34th Street_ (1947)? 😉

Phil Stubblefield

Another one of these movies I haven't watched and never planned to watch but only did because I know watching it with you makes it a fun experience no matter how much I like or dislike the movie. So thank you! Loved you reaction. Probably could dive into the Mad Max movies with Mel Gibson at some point? :)

KaffeeKind

Once again, this woman knows how to provide some after work viewing entertainment.

Julian San

I've been cloned and replaced. Send halp!

That Riggs/Joshua fight was really the only moment that took me out of the movie. Like why wouldn't any of the cops stop that??

Addie Counts

Great film. Whos the new girl with the straight hair. 😘

PHILLIP CORNISH

I hope you'll eventually continue with this franchise, I found all four to be well worth watching. The third one is my favorite, and even though the fourth one seems to get a lot of criticism, I enjoy it quite a bit.

Patrick Egan

Hope you eventually watch this movie's screenwriter(Shane Black)'s directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. It's way smarter and funnier than this one, and it's the movie that got the big studios re-interested in Robert Downey Jr, and basically won him the role of Iron Man. (RDJ returned the favor by getting Shane Black to direct Iron Man 3.)

sarCC

...and I do hope that you also watch Oppenheimer (2023) on Wednesday, since you plan on watching Gremlins (1984) later on this week. #OppenheimerForAddieCounts

Happy Monday, Addie! I hope that you had a great weekend. 😊 One of my favorites won the poll. And this first movie happens to be my favorite in the "Lethal Weapons" series. The team up between Danny Glover and Mel Gibson in these movies is phenomenal. Glad that you're go to watch "Gremlins" as well. Love that movie! Another great movie with a great team up duo that I very highly recommend is the 1997 "Nothing to Lose" starring Martin Lawrence and Tim Robbins. I hope that you have a great day today. 😊

Randee Carreno

The ultimate buddy cop movie... though the whole police-enabled UFC match between Riggs and Joshua at the end isn't my favorite. I'd argue the second one is even better than this one (also not quite as dark), so here's hoping you also at least check that one out after the holidays. There's also currently a fifth movie in the works that will be out either by the end of next year or the year after, with Mel Gibson also directing.

Byrd N. Hand

Happy Monday, Addie. I'm so glad that you kicked off your first Holiday movie this year with Lethal Weapon (1987). If you loved this one, you'll love Lethal Weapon 2, 3 & 4. I plan on watching it at some point this week. See you soon for Gremlins (1984). BTW, nice straight hairstyle. And I also stand with you on the "Die Hard Is A Christmas Movie" statement.
