THE GODFATHER PART II - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to The Godfather Part II! I wasn't going to continue with The Godfather sequels, but I read so many comments saying that this one was as good/if not better than the first! I loved seeing Vito's backstory woven though what was currently happening with the Corleone family, and Robert De Niro is so good in this role! And FYI (so that you're not waiting around for it), I'm not planning on watching Part III.  Enjoy!

THE GODFATHER PART II - Full Length Reaction!

Comments

Ya expected the Star Wars Trilogy to be bad, but you found out they weren't bad. The same can be said of Godfather Part 3.

Randolph Tirazona

Bleak. I recommend Taxi Driver (1976) (nominated forBest Picture Oscar) that has a young Robert De Niro (as a taxi driver) and a 12-year old Jodie Foster (as a prostitute). Both De Niro and Foster were nominated for Oscar.

I'll also just add that Connie gets quite a bit more character depth in the third movie, which might be another compelling thing to make more casual viewers check it out. [last hail mary pass thrown]

Speaking of A24, I do hope that you'll watch more of their movies after watching Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022). #MoreA24ForAddieCounts

I second Taxi Driver (1976), The Deer Hunter (1978), Raging Bull (1980) and Cape Fear (1991). I'll also throw in Mean Streets (1973), Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995), Heat (1995), The Fan (1996), Ronin (1998), Men of Honor (2000), The Score (2001), as well as his more comedic movies like Analyze This (1999), Analyze That (2002), Meet the Parents (2000), Meet the Fockers (2004), Little Fockers (2010) and The Intern (2015). #MoreRobertDeNiroForAddieCounts

Just noticed your A24 shirt! ❤️

The correct answer is "Taxi Driver," of course. 😉 "The Deer Hunter," "Raging Bull," and "The King of Comedy" are also up there.

I meant 'numerical suffix' in terms of either roman numerals or regular numbers. There was no "[insert title here] 2/3/4/etc." before this film. Don't get me wrong, I understand her desire to watch crowd-pleasers, but I also want to see her take some more risks, as all the best reactors do.

Addie, I envy that young Robert De Niro movies are new to you. I don’t even know where to tell you to begin. IMDB has him listed for over 130 roles. He’s done comedies, dramas, suspense thrillers, even horror with the remake of “Frankenstein” (1994). I guess to start off, I would recommend you see De Niro’s performance in the Martin Scorsese remake of the suspense thriller “Cape Fear” (1991). Also he’s played a lot of gangster roles, but I feel you should wait on those for now. He has more range than that. Perhaps check him out in the excellent action comedy “Midnight Run” (1988). Then there’s his highly underrated performance in the drama “Awakenings” (1990), co-starring Robin Williams. In any case, I really look forward for you to do more De Niro reactions.

A couple other comments: -- The senator didn't kill the prostitute, the Corleones did. Somehow they got the senator unconscious and staged it so that when he woke up it would look like he'd done it. They were able to do this because the Corleone's owned that brothel and Geary was an apparently oblivious customer. That is why later in the movie he is more hospitable towards them, because he thought they had that on him. -- I love the last scene with the flashback to 1941. Ironic that Fredo was the only one who supported Mike at the time but then Mike ruthlessly killed Fredo anyway. -- I'm glad you commented on the room next to the lake! That scene is one of my favorite parts of of the movie just because of the beautiful setting; the cool room with the great view of the heavy snow falling over Lake Tahoe. I wish that was real and a place I could go and sit. -- The deleted scenes from the Godfather I & II are worth a watch. They are on Youtube and last about an hour.

"It was never Pantangeli, I've always known that. It was Roth all along.

So the guy who takes Vito for the rug is Clemenza, the "leave the gun, take the cannoli" guy from the first movie. The third member of their crime trio that Fanucci tries to shake down is Tessio, the guy who tried to betray Michael in the first movie. Also, if anyone is ever in New York, I definitely recommend the Ellis Island tour, it is really interesting!

I know, right. She's into more of the feel-good type movies, as exemplified by the results of the "What Should I Watch?" quiz she took in April. And not only that, she's also heavily drawn more to Sci-fi & Fantasy after having seen Star Wars & LOTR. Even I'm pushing for her to watch more darker & edgier intense movies, after seeing her reaction to The Dark Knight (2008), which left her on-edge afterwards. But having said that, I'm also supportive of seeing her watch fun movies as well. And the numeric suffix is known as a Roman Numeral.

Alex Tan

Me too.

Honestly, I wish Addie was a little more interactive in these comment sections so that we could get a somewhat better idea as to what she's thinking regarding future reactions... especially for those of us who have now been with her for as long as we have. 🤔 And, yes, I hope she eventually changes her mind and finishes the trilogy. I mean, it's just ONE more movie.

The whole Michael-Roth-Pentangeli thing took me several watches to understand when I first saw these movies. Roth was really the person who tried to have Michael killed. Michael did not want Roth to know that he knew though, so when he met with Roth, Michael played it off as he thought it was Pentangeli. Michael wanted to keep his relationship with Roth strong because of how much money he was staged to make in Cuba with him. Then when Michael tells Pentangeli that it was Roth who tried to kill him, here he is telling the truth. However later when Pentangeli goes to “settle his differences with the Rosato brothers”, Roth has this meeting staged to make it appear that Michael was double crossing Pentangeli. This has the desired affect, as Pentangeli is taken away thinking that Michael has double crossed him. In reality Roth doesn’t want Michael around, because of what Michael said “He thinks he’s going to live forever” and Roth stands to make more money if Michael is out of the equation. So Roth decides to take down the entire Corleone family. His plan is to trick Pentangeli into turning on Michael because Pentangeli can incriminate Michael directly. After the staged meeting, Roth puts his Senate connections on to Pentangeli and gets them to open an investigation into the Corlene family with Pentangeli as the star witness. Later we see this plan fall apart after Michael brings Pentangeli’s brother to the hearing as a threat. Hopefully I got all that right!

I also hope that she ends up watching Oppenheimer (2023), next week. I've been pushing for that since Thanksgiving week. #OppenheimerForAddieCounts

Christmas comes early with The Godfather part II reaction!

Julian San

Granted, it was *never* bad, just not as brilliant as the first 2. But, alas, Sith deal in absolutes. I know Addie is drawn more to 'fun' movies, but come on. 😕

Byrd N. Hand

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 I'm really looking forward to this one. I've only seen bits and pieces of this movie. And I've heard some people say that it's one of the best ever movie sequels. I hope that you end up watching Part 3. Just to complete that trilogy. Looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

Randee Carreno

I know, right. And the newer recut of the movie finally redeems Part III.

Alex Tan

...and if you don't plan on watching The Godfather: Part III (1990), at least watch the newly recut version called The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone (2020). It's FAR more superior to the theatrical cut. #TheGodfatherCodaTheDeathOfMichaelCorleoneForAddieCounts

Alex Tan

Happy Wednesday, Addie. This is another reaction that we also can't refuse. This is a prime example of a sequel that's greater than or equal to the original. Seeing Vito Corleone's rise to power in the prequel section was phenomenal, especially with Robert De Niro's performance throughout. Seeing Vito's mom and brother getting killed shortly after his father's funeral was heartbreaking. No wonder why he sought revenge against the men who killed her. I also got a good laugh out of Frank Pentangeli trying to get the orchestra to play an Italian Tarantella, only for them to play Pop Goes The Weasel. BTW, nice A24 t-shirt.

Alex Tan

Believe it or not, this was the first-ever sequel to use a numerical suffix. I'm disappointed that you're apparently giving in to all the BS hot air about Part III, though. 😔 I mean, you watch every single MCU and X-Men movie without question, but you can't be bothered with that one??
