THE GODFATHER - Full Length Reaction!

Here's the full length reaction to The Godfather! I didn't realize that so many of the poll choices would be so popular, so I'll watch several of those movies over the next month or so. This movie surprised me! I was curious if it would feel slow because the movie is so long, but I found myself captivated with each scene! Enjoy!

Thanks for reacting to this one. You seemed to understand what was going on, better than most reactors.

Thanks for watching this one! I'm always thrilled to watch another generation be introduced to this masterpiece. I will also cast another vote to watch part 2! It is somehow better than the first; there is something about it which makes it very unique. You won't be disappointed!

Corks

Thanks for noticing.

Julian San

I would urge you to watch Godfather 2. It actually is a better movie (if that's even possible) imo. You also get to find out why Tom Hagen is/was 'out', among other things.

Part 2 is arguably better. Def worth watching in the future

Jason Schwartzman's half-brother is cinematographer John Schwartzman, ASC who shot two movies with Nicolas Cage, The Rock (1996, directed by Michael Bay) & National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007, also with DP Amir Mokri), both produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

Alex Tan

Of course, Sofia also (controversially) plays Michael's daughter in Part III. While we're still on the Coppola family, Talia Shire (Connie) is Francis' real-life sister... and she's the mother of actor Jason Schwartzman, who's appeared in most of Wes Anderson's films, who often co-writes his films with Roman Coppola, Sofia's older brother. And who's another cousin of Roman, Sofia, and Jason? One Nicolas Coppola -- better known as Nicolas Cage. 😵

Byrd N. Hand

From what I've heard, Coppola made a point to actually deliberately film him while rehearsing his lines (unbeknownst to the actor himself at the time), which makes his actual encounter with the Don that more humorous.

Byrd N. Hand

I swear, it's sooo cringe and simultaneously charming the way Luca Brasi rehearses his ass off to speak to Don Corleone only to OF COURSE stumble his words when the big moment comes haha smh it makes me smile every time.

Julian San

Ooh. That'll look like a movie worth seeing. It also has Matthew Broderick in it.

Alex Tan

"The Freshman" is also worth checking out for sake of seeing Brando send up his Don Corleone performance.

Byrd N. Hand

And all 5 films he was in were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (even if you include the archived footage of him from "Godfather II" that appears in the original theatrical cut of "Godfather III").

Byrd N. Hand

The third one *really* isn't that bad. It's like criticizing Mt. Kilimanjaro for not being Mt. Everest (like its predecessors). Addie has definitely watched worse for the channel.

Byrd N. Hand

John Cazale (Fredo) was cut down by lung cancer at 42. So obscenely young. What a loss. His film career was only seven years long. Only five movies. Yet many actors said he was more gifted than any of them. Plus a serious intellectual and uncommonly generous to his fellow actors. An enormous talent.

Herman Orff

one of the greatest films of all time. can’t wait.

Chip MC

Godfather was awesome, but many people say the Godfather 2 is as good or better. One of the rare movies that the sequel was as good as the original. Godfather 3 though I heard wasn't very good. But you should definitely see Godfather 2, with both Al Pacino and Robert Dinero!

Lana Gorgeous

@Phil Stubblefield, I bet that ties with Snake-Woman.

Alex Tan

Speaking of Sofia Coppola, I also suggest The Virgin Suicides (1999), Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), Somewhere (2010), The Bling Ring (2013), The Beguiled (2017), and On the Rocks (2020). #MoreSofiaCoppolaForAddieCounts

In the pivotal baptism scene, the infant playing Carlo and Connie's baby boy was director Francis Ford Coppola's daughter and future writer/director, Sofia Coppola. Abe Vigoda played Tessio but was also fairly well known for his recurring role as a detective in a sitcom situated in a New York police precinct, "Barney Miller". Abe worked with regular cast member Ron Glass, who later played Shepherd Book in "Firefly".

ButtercupsTrueLove

Let's tie in her love of all things snake: The Crimson Ophidian! 🤣 (Look it up!)

Phil Stubblefield

...and before, the "Crimson Vixen".

Alex Tan

I think you have an odd addiction to calling Addie the "Crimson Countess" 😂

LightsCameraJake

I second The Deer Hunter (1978) and every John Cazale movie as well. #MoreJohnCazaleForAddieCounts She should watch the 2019 Final Cut of Apocalypse Now (1979). #ApocalypseNowFinalCutForAddieCounts Other Marlon Brando movies that I'll also throw in are A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) & On The Waterfront (1954). #MoreMarlonBrandoForAddieCounts

Alex Tan

Hear, hear. I do hope Addie gets to that movie soon.

Alex Tan

Yes. Godfather 2... to keep the Patreoni family happy.

Mr. Writhms

Yeahhh... the rules concerning animals being used in movies weren't so strict when this movie was made.

Mr. Writhms

Wait WHAT

Addie Counts

I wanted to say something profound or amusing but couldn’t think of anything. But what is there to say; The Crimson Countess watches The Godfather. That’s all that has to be said.

Julian San

Not-so-fun fact: The horse head in the bed was REAL. Back in the old days, they used horse meat to make dog food. So they went to a dog food factory and asked for a horse head to use for the movie because Coppola thought the prop horse head they made didn't look real enough. The poor actor in the bed didn't know it was real until after they shot the scene. Yikes! On a lighter side: The cat in the beginning was a stray cat they found on the lot and wasn't supposed to be in the movie. But it took to Brando so they put the cat in the scene and it was perfect.

Mr. Writhms

You've reacted to "The Godfather" -- thus, you've made us an offer we can't refuse. 😉 The second one is arguably even better.

Byrd N. Hand

As well as "The Conversation" (also directed by Francis Ford Coppola) and "The Deer Hunter." Every film Cazale was in in his short career was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Oh, yeah, also Coppola's 4th '70s masterpiece, "Apocalypse Now," also co-starring Marlon Brando (Vito Corleone) and Robert Duvall (Tom Hagen).

Byrd N. Hand

Im literally in shock no one voted for scarface, like thats the best movie on there

Ernesto Lopez

Another movie that I would love to see you watch with Al Pacino & John Cazale (Fredo) is Dog Day Afternoon (1975). #DogDayAfternoonForAddieCounts

Here's a note about the film's aspect ratio for its theatrical & home video release. The screen grabs from the full frame version are partially stretched due to the capture of them. http://www.thegodfathertrilogy.com/widescreen.html And here's some behind the scenes material on the film. https://youtu.be/5mUuJ5FTFFs?feature=shared

Alex Tan

Yay! This is one of the Greats!

Randolph Tirazona

Happy Friday, Addie. The Godfather (1972) is a very captivating crime masterpiece that you can't refuse. See you soon for The Godfather: Part II (1974).
