Late to the party, as usual... This movie suffered from a lot of unfortunate issues, despite having the incomparable Anya Taylor-Joy and Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones fame. Risky attempt at a mutant horror movie, questionable writing, less than good acting overall (even the heavy hitters seemed to phone it in). And then it was released during the pandemic so it got almost no marketing, and thus crappy box office. Don't expect to see another New Mutants movie any time soon. All of it a shame.

In the X-Men movies we got Peter (Colossus) without an accent. I don’t even remember any trailers or anything for this movie. It was very strange. At least we can mark it off the list. Take care of yourself, Addie!!

My girlfriend & I saw it in theaters last September and it was very scary but we did enjoy it. But I do NOT recommend that movie to you for Halloween because it WILL scare you, like... a lot. A lot more than The Shining (1980) did. A 40-second trailer for Smile (2022) played before Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and if you saw that movie in theaters, you would've closed your eyes and covered your ears when that trailer played.

2023-08-23 20:55:53 +0000 UTCI first read the New Mutant comics that this movie is kinda sorta based on more than 30 years ago, and I re-read them every 5 years or so. Absolutely brilliant example of visual storytelling. I give the makers of this movie props for having the courage to swing for the fences again and again in putting their own stamp on a legend. I just wish they hadn't whiffed so much. I have always loved these five kids and one dragon (yes, even Berto), and I feel like the actors did a good job of bringing them to life. Dani and Rahne together were really sweet together, and it was refreshing to see an unapologetic same-sex relationship in a superhero movie. Making Ilyana a racist mean girl was an unfortunate choice, but when she pulled out the armor and sword and put herself between the Demon Bear and her friends I was like "Yes, that's my girl!" And, um, well, wish I had more good things to say about it. But I don't.

The best part of this movie was when I searched for "new" and decided to watch "The Emperor's New Groove" next. So it isn't all bad.

But, yes, after this, she's got no excuse for not finishing that trilogy, or continuing on with at least the third "Terminator" movie, second and third "Matrix" movies, etc. (Of course, I thought the same thing after she watched all the Disney Star Wars stuff...)

Honestly, after subjecting yourself to this, I'd say you have no excuse for not continuing some of these other movie franchises you've left dangling so far (unless you plain just don't want to)... 🤨 Anyway, on a brighter note, I look forward to your presumed "Hacksaw Ridge" reaction on Friday. 👍 (I'm guessing you're having trouble with your "Braveheart" edit, since it's not yet up on YouTube? 🤔)

This was the first movie that my girlfriend & I saw in IMAX, after the theaters reopened during the pandemic, and we both actually enjoyed it, due to the film's horror elements, in spite of its quality slump. Like I said before, she & I are horror fans. Those creatures that attacked Illyana & Sam are known as the Smiley Men. To be honest, I actually enjoy Deadpool (2016) & Deadpool 2 (2018) a lot more.
