In season 1 when the reverend had a seizure during one of their town meetings AL mentioned that he had a brother that suffered from seizures as well. I think she changed her mind about the viewing after she saw how the camp turned out for them. Everyone wanting to pay their respects and be there for them.

William's death wasn't originally planned but the actor's mom was apparently so annoying on set that the creator David Milch just decided to kill him off. So not surprised this stretch of episodes have been the lowest rated even if your ratings aren't that low.
