When Alma came to the hardware store to check on Seth after the big fight, he said to his wife that he had written to her about Alma. Not about their affair of course, but about how she came to be in the camp, and his wife went along with that lie. When he talked about the lie, that's what he meant. Not that he had lied about wanting to be a good husband and father. Cy would be buying the titles for George Hearst. He wants to own as much of the gold claims as possible.
