When Nora is confronted by Ellie at gunpoint, she sees it as an opportunity to talk shit, which leads to her dying (shocker). When Owen is confronted by Ellie at gunpoint, he sees it as opportunity to play cowboy and dies as a result (shocker). When someone points a gun at you, it's not an invitation to get cute. Joel understood this, which is why when Abby threatened to kill Dinah he complied. Abby's crew lacks his self awareness and emotional intelligence, which makes it very difficult to sympathize with them. Mel being the exception, as she's the only one who seems to appreciate the danger of having a gun pointed at her. It's unfortunate that she ends up needlessly killed due to Owen thinking that he can outdraw and successfully shoot someone who already has a gun aimed at him.
