John Goodman's one-eyed character is based on the Cyclops, who in he Odyssey gets killed with a sharpened stake to his eye. I really like the way the Coen Bros toyed with that before having him killed by the cross. Also, the dude who fights with Everett over his wife is the reverend from Deadwood
