Funny enough roman troops defecting to the other side like that wasn't that uncommon when it was roman vs roman. Especially during the original civil war with Caesar and Pompey, Caesar had gained a reputation for clemency and mercy because of all the pardons and he would always let roman troops go even if they were Pompey's. It was actually a brilliant strategy that won him the war, but ultimately got him killed. Octavian learned the lesson from this and you wont catch him pardoning many people lol
