Very thankful this Thanksgiving

Hi everyone, I just wanted to make sure that in spite of the long radio silence here that you all know how grateful my family and I are for your support. Without your help it would have been a much harder road to Slackware 15.0. Speaking of which, I think we can truly see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm about to merge some updates to the GTK stack and new Xfce right now, and then once we get Plasma 5 merged into the main tree and clear out some unneeded cruft we'll be just about ready for a beta release. Thanks again *so much!* I hope my friends in the US are having a good Thanksgiving, that my Canadian friends had a good one last month, and that everyone everywhere is having a great day today. Cheers!

In the 80's as a software engineer I came across UNIX and was smitten - I had spent years working on IBM 360's; 370's; Univac 1100 series; ICL 1900 series and honeywell as well as dec vax systems - yes I was a busy bee. But I really wanted to work with UNIX and I finally got my chance with Sun Systems and Sun OS. Wow!! and then I looked at finding something for my home computer, and I came across a company selling Linux (Slackware) and FreeBSD back around 1996. I was taken with both but realised I be able to install Linux easier. It's just come to me - Walnut Creek was the company!!! anyway Slackware was my first Linux and my favourite and I'm just about to rekindle my love of the software. Thank you Patrick. Keep well.

I installed Slackware in 1998, I was 14 years old, very curious and passionate (and I still am). I spent Many hours setting up Slackware on my Pentium 233 Mhz, 16 MB RAM and 3 GiB HDD, and I learned a Lot. I was a very poor child in a poor neighborhood and Linux was my passion. Later I became a software engineer. Never left Slackware. I'm happy I can support the project somehow.

In summer of 93, I had a PC with what I seem to recall being an IBM 486-something (had faster clock that Intel at the time). I was struggling with Apple's A/UX on a Macintosh II, and not getting very far (despite the 20+ volumes of 3-ring bound manuals). Then a friend handed me a stack of 23 floppies with something called Linux on it (Slackware, I believe, but memory can play tricks). Life was never the same. Pushed the Mac II out of the way and charged forward! Thanks for all the great bits for so many years, Pat!

I installed Slackware late 1993 early '94 as a young man, bright eyed and bushytailed. I am now much older, not that much wiser, but still using Slackware:) Thanks Pat.

We've never talked personally, but I feel like I've known you most of my life. Slackware was my first introduction to Linux in the later 90's, and I've never left. Just wanted to say thanks!

The merging of the latest Plasma into -current has me excited again about using Slackware on the desktop. I’m going to make a -current ISO and load it up onto one of my boxes :-) Thank you Pat for all your fine work across the years. Slackware was my first Linux distro. Sorry about how the store ripped you off. Hopefully we can make things better again.

Thanks pat for all the effort you make to maintain slackware, I'm looking forward to the new official version.

Thanks for everything Pat! When I saw Darkstar I new this was the only distro I would ever use. Wishing you happiness, health, and peace of mind.

When I first saw one of the first Slackware ads on Usenet in the early 90s, I said to myself "this is bloated, heck if I'm going to get a QIC tape drive to install it reasonably, Manchester Interim seems much more reasonable!" Now of course, times have changed, and Slackware is the only reasonable distro around. :) Thanks a lot for keeping it going, Pat.

Thank you for all the work you've done over the years, to allow people like me to enjoy using Slackware. It's a real pleasure to be a part of it

Hi Patrick, I have been using Slackware since 1998, when I started my professional career. And I always wondered how I could help you directly. Because your efforts to deliver us a Linux distro with such good quality and stability are incredible and I always wanted to thank you, but I never had the opportunity. The concept of transparency, simplicity and direct access to things, which you implemented in Slackware, has positively influenced several of my decisions over the years in different areas of my career. (Do you have any idea how powerful that was ? ;-D ) Anyway ... I just have to thank you very much. Let Slackware 15.0 come !!! Big hug from your admirer of Brazil.

Happy Holidays to ya all. Since were getting so close to slack 15 I have one thing I would like to bring up regarding plasma 5 and wondering if it might be possible to have added to the distro. In regards to themes could you include the kde3 and blue dotted pattern style window bars as well as colored kde4 style icon pack? I can add them myself a guy on the web compiled me a kde3 theme but for some reason the title bars will just not be the light blue color since it always changes color when I set other elements on the screen. One other issue I had was the mouse pointer would randomly change to different sizes on some applications. Though those are kde issues mainly. But it would be sweet to have a default included colorful kde3 theme specific to Slackware kde.

Thank you! Every time I use Slackware and feel the simplicity of it I feel like I'm home.

I've been using Slackware since 1996, and it's ruined me for any other distro. Thank you for your decades of work, and may you have the most rewarding of holidays.

Thank you for your hard work!

Hope you'll have a great Christmas, Pat!

What they said.

A very long time ago I was getting my feet wet on compuserve with my Amiga 1000 when this m,esage hit me: "I'm running Slackware Linux on a 486x100 on a home-built clone and get whatever I want on the internet for free". I didn't know what the internet, a PC clone, Slackware or Linux or a 486 were ..but soon found out and they changed my life. Don't know about anybody else but the holiday don't even come close to the thanks I figure I owe to people like Patrick.

I’m thankful for Slackware and its community. Happy Thanksgiving!
