Powerful ^

Brace yourself, it's a long one: Funny thing about the Alien/Predator and bullying conversation. I had a pretty rough time during 3-8 grade with bullying. Let's just say it gave me a unique perspective on life, the rules of society, all that good stuff. My Highschool was tiny and combined with Jr High, around 550 kids total, so wasn't a lot of places to hide out. I remember in Jr High this older kid who was even more of an outcast than I was dropped an Alien: Genocide comic out of his bag. I was big into X-Men thanks to the cartoon at that time (early 90's here) but was getting to that age where it was kinda kids stuff. I picked up the comic to hand it back to him and noticed the page had this guy yelling "OH SHIT!" in a panel. First time I ever saw a cuss word in a comic, blew my mind. Felt like I was looking at a Playboy at school or something, so I immediately offered my lunch money for it. Growing up I had always seen the Alien movies in the video store but the box art was pretty simple, all I knew that it was a "scary" movie, had no idea what it was really about so it was already slightly taboo. I even hid the damn thing under my bed away from my regular comics. Genocide was my first entry into "grown up" comics and I ate it up. That paved the way for Predator and even though things got better for me in high school (smart ass powers finally kicked in), always had a thing for characters that were self reliant and operated outside of "normal" system. Predator with all his gear, gadgets, wits, etc taking out a group of steroid mercs who would normally be the jock good guys hit home with me. Same reason I eventually got into Boba Fett. Pretty much any character that operates independently and has all the tools for the job relying mostly on themselves is my cup of tea. Those independent characters helped with the bullying, taught me to be self reliant (maybe a little too much) and were what I needed at the time. Of course both franchises are absolute turds now, but hey, still came in at a pivotal point in my life and made an impact. Bullying sucks, it left it's marks on me for sure, and I worry about my own kids but at the same time I know it's part of the experience. The world is harsh, you learn and adapt and eventually learn how to survive in it.
