2023-03-13 03:21:43 +0000 UTCYeah, one point of clarification, everyone that dies dies in the cold open is with Marlo. Avon has upgraded the soldiers and firepower and is hitting back. Though Marlo kills the only known character, lol. This is definitely a show where your opinion changes with rewatch. I was riding 100% with Stringer the first time I watched this and now I can't stand him and disagree with most of his opinions and actions. You notice more when you aren't still dealing with the suspense of what will happen.

I mean, Avon is being reckless and stubborn because of his ego, but he also has a much better understanding of what Marlo is. When Stringer starts talking about Prop Joe "mediating" a meet, Avon quite sensibly points out that "if he brings a gun with him maybe it could work".

Marlo wants this war too, but everyone is on Avon to just lay down and let Marlo win, even now when he's starting to make progress. I think the point of showing Rawls in the gay bar is to put all his bravado and crass talk in perspective. That if you're gay in these institutions you have to put up a straight man smokescreen, constantly talking about "muff" and strippers and how you're a red-blooded man (or you think you have to) in order to have people's respect and get ahead in your career. Like calling people cocksucker too. It's a way of deflecting.
