Sci-Fi Poll!
Added 2026-01-07 02:53:51 +0000 UTCLast week's "Suggest a Movie Poll" was a huge success! Thanks for all your comments and suggestions, we have over 100 of them! We're busy working on organizing them into a spreadsheet for polls throughout the upcoming year.
To kick things off, we pulled some sci-fi suggestions from the list. We'd be excited to watch any of them, so vote for the one you're most excited to watch!

Late to the poll, but please watch both top choices. Both are incredible for very different reasons. Oblivion is one of the most beautiful movies ever, and Gattaca has an amazing plot, so well done.

2026-02-07 00:26:35 +0000 UTC"King Kong" (2005) is an homage to the 1933 original that tries to make it bigger and better. I feel like that's a bit misguided. It's seems like this is the same impulse that makes people colorize a black and white movie in order to increase its appeal to a contemporary audience. Kong 2005 isn't bad, it just seems to me you are missing out on the real King Kong if you haven't watched the 1933 movie. "Godzilla Minus One" is harder for me to analyze because it's a Japanese film, but it feels pretty different in character from the original. Saying more than that is probably stepping into spoiler land. In any case I definitely feel you ought to watch the original Godzilla from 1954 if you plan to watch this remake. For both of these I'd recommend the originals over the remakes and recommend seeing the originals before the remakes if you plan to see them all. I get that the reactor-verse is not going to be as friendly to you posting a reaction to these old movies. So maybe watch the originals on your own in preparation for reacting to the remakes.

2026-01-12 01:38:44 +0000 UTCI just want to talk about giant monsters for a moment. Giant Monster movies (AJA "Kaiju" movies). King Kong is the OG that really inspired so many story tellers. The 1933 "King King" is fine. Respect to the original. But for my money, the 2005 Peter Jackson (director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) version of "King Kong" is lovingly faithful to the original film. And all before, and after, are interpretations. Many folks love the 1977 version, maybe it was their introduction to the beast? But that's just nostalgia love, IMHO. The modern "Monsterverse" series of films are fun, but can be tedious at times. (I think the maplenuts would have great fun watching them!) 2005 King Kong, and Godzilla: minus one (on the channel now,) are my favorites. I'm curious others think?

2026-01-11 11:18:13 +0000 UTC"Gattaca" is very good. I voted for "Oblivion" for I don't know what reason. It was hard to choose between those two. Maybe because I prefer a good Tom Cruise movie to a good Ethan Hawke movie? Flip of the coin. I'll be happy with either one. I saw "Deja Vu" and thought it was only okay. Denzel Washington is good, as always, but in my opinion the premise is ambitious but flawed. Haven't seen "Soldier", so have no opinion on that one. Another good Tom Cruise sci-fi movie is "Edge of Tomorrow" with Emily Blunt. Don't know if you've seen it or not yet, but if you haven't you should consider it for a future sci-fi poll. [Edit: you've already seen it. Guess I should have checked first.] And, since I brought up Emily Blunt, you could also add "A Quiet Place" to a future sci-fi or horror poll. It's kind of in both genres. [Edit: you haven't reacted to it, so keeping that as a suggestion.]
