2025-02-03 19:52:21 +0000 UTCI don't understand much of Trump's ways of being. I agree that we must be strong against China, Russia and others. After all they are rivals. But I do have an issue with his impulsive nature. He is turning allies and potential allies against the USA. What good is that going to do? Nothing. I am not saying that America should be foolish, I am saying that Trump needs to stop many things it is doing or the prestige and credibility of the USA will be destroyed. He is driving allies and potential allies to the hands to enemies. Russia and China are enemies and that is all there is to it. Moreover America also needs to pay attention to India as it is sucking up its tech jobs away. Moreover America has a tough issue domestically that puts it at a disadvantage around the world and that is, unstable politics and economic policy. Why would manufacturers come back to America if today they will have a favorable policy in taxes and legal issues if the next administration will take it away? Unless America gets its act together domestically, it will never succeed. The way that it will succeed in building allies and getting the help it needs is through working with its allies and not being a bully. For example Mexico's cartels do the nastiest things and all with American weapons. 74 percent of the weapons used by the cartels are American weapons. It is teamwork, and sanity that will save America and not impulsive behavior. The Panama Canal thing and Greenland thing are other examples of America creating enemies, where it should search for cooperation with a pragmatic approach.

2025-02-03 09:05:00 +0000 UTCI think this is more than just Trump. I'm pretty sure Musk has his hand in this. First of all, TSMC is ALREADY building massive chip fabs in the US (and other countries outside of Taiwan) and they take years to build. Trump may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he probably knows that. Second, Musk is known to not just have business dealings in China, but is also very pro-China and unfriendly toward Taiwan. He has publicly stated that Taiwan should be taken over by China. Musk could be temporarily hurt by tariffs on Taiwan, but he knows that TSMC is building fabs here and probably would also like to see China achieve advanced chip making capability faster, and wouldn't care if Taiwan is left out to dry. As for encouraging Taiwan (especially the KMT) to take it's own defense more seriously, maybe that could be a possible side effect, but I doubt that's the motivating force here. There are better ways to do that. Also, regarding 好自為之, yes it can mean "take care of yourself" in a "watch out" sort of way. Probably the best analogy is the famous Gordon Lightfoot lyrics "Sundown, you'd better take care if I find you've been creeping 'round my back stairs"!
