The Man Who Laughs with Anna Monoxide
Another person who didn’t hesitate when asked what they wanted to do, Anna quickly said “the Man Who Laughs”. I also love this movie. Although, more a melodrama than a horror film, it’s gritty circus sideshow sets filmed by german expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni (in Hollywood) certainly has it playing like a horror film.
Much like Hollywood today when they find a theme that sells they run with it. After the success of the Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1923 (with story also by Victor Hugo) they followed that with Phantom of the Opera in 1925 and to continue to ride this success train they made the Man Who Laughs in 1928 about another lonely man who hides because of his appearance. This time it’s Gwynplaine (Conrad Veidt) who orphaned as a child is captured by outlaws and they carve his face into a permanent hideous grin ( yes, the creation of the Joker was influenced by the character) As an adult Gwynplaine never shows his face except to reveal it for money on the sideshow stage. Sounds like me and a lot of my friends. An entirety other real and vulnerable side comes out only within the bizarre comfort of stage lights!
I wont spoil the movie for you by explaining the rest. It’s probably streaming free somewhere. See it. Its great!
Also adding a couple of bonus photos from this set since we are all here for the nudies too.
