Why Do We Still Commute?

Why Do We Still Commute? Why Do We Still Commute?

Comments

After I traveled to Amsterdam and Japan, both of which have fantastic public transit, I’ve hated the way we are expected to commute in the US. Yes not everyone can or should work remote, but at least if you could take the train or bus to work you don’t have to be constantly paying attention or stressing like you would driving in rush hour traffic

also, the old 9 to 5 time frame how much unnecessary traffic because everyone clocks out at 5 and uses the same exits, on ramps and main intersections? It Only makes sense for professions that reuqire timely, coordinated full team shift changes.

FRFR. You can’t properly discuss commuting without discussing public transit. Unlike driving, it’s one of those rare things that only gets better as usage increases. And I get it; I don’t look to car enthusiasts when I’m seeking thought leadership on taking the bus. But consider the relationship one could have with their vehicle if it weren’t based solely on moving your meat sack from A to B to A every weekday. I’d like to imagine it would encourage driving for the sheer pleasure of it. To appreciate a vehicle as an industrial object designed to appeal to personal sensibilities as opposed to a transportation appliance. But I’m biased. My favorite jobs and commutes were when I could bicycle and take the train most days, and it took about the same time as driving in traffic. Taking the car, driving, got to be a treat rather than a chore. And I lost weight. What’s not to love?

I lived 1.5 miles from my career for 15 years, then the next 5 working from home during covid and thereafter with the same job. I retired, got bored, went back to work for a buddy - 30 miles away from home. Every day is a 30-45 minute each way trip. I can say very clearly that the productivity you feel, and the lack of stress, you get from not driving that trip every day is palpable and real. A half hour drive to work is ENTIRELY different than a half hour drive just for driving or to get to a place you want to be that isnt work. The difference between driving a car you love (a Golf R in my case) to work and the same car to anything else will make anyone hate their beloved vehicle due to the former.

Last time I commuted to work it almost killed me. In fact I've totaled two cars going to work.( Not my fault in either case)
