Ready to start the journey? LETS GO!

The introduction cinematic was one of the very first thing we made for the entire game, believe it or not! The characters already had their personalities established, but they needed a proper introduction. We also wanted the intro to capture the overall feeling of the game: adventurous, fun, silly, and packed with action!

The idea was for our very talkative hoverboard, F.R.A.N.K., to introduce everyone while hinting at what had happened to the world.
Fun fact: we originally wanted to keep the fact that the main character was a cat a secret. Looking back now, it feels a little silly (especially since Gori was already in the gameplay and on the cover art). But at the time, the plan was to sneak up on him into the cinematic with a “TADA! It’s a CAT!” I bet everyone was totally shocked at the reveal… right?

Anyway, the whole cinematic started as a blockout using assets from our previous game, Apsulov: End of Gods. In fact, a surprising amount of that carried over into the finished scene. All the candy, for example, is straight from Apsulov and can still be spotted in Henrik’s room and around BORRcorp.

We wanted the scene to look very childish, almost like it was made of toys. A message that, thankfully, most people picked up on and that set the tone for the rest of the game.
One thing we do regret, though, was the writing on the screens. Since it was supposed to look like a child’s scribbles, we added intentional misspellings… and wow, did we get a ton of reports about those.

If you look closely at the newspaper in the cinematic, you’ll also spot some early worldbuilding things. Small hints about Earth’s history. The first clues about the shady Cool Toyz™, and even a few hidden easter eggs referencing our earlier games, Apsulov and Unforgiving.

Two big changes we had to make along the way involved the Earth and the Moon in the background outside the window. In the beginning, we modeled them to their real-life sizes (yes, full scale). But as you might guess, they were way too massive to be sustainable. They made the game unnecessarily huge, so in the end we had to shrink them down.

Finally, let’s talk about the little cat you see right at the start. Originally, it was just a placeholder toy with the same color as Gori. A toy like the one in the video but very different in design. At first, it wasn’t meant to be anything special, just a subtle nod to Gori himself. But as development and the story progressed, that cat-toy grew into its own character, with a much deeper and more meaningful background.
When we reach the level 7 cinematics, I’ll share more about it!

Hope you found this fun!
