Adding "Leave Protagonist's Room" Functionality to 1980s Mode

In theory, it should be easy to simply let Ryoba - the protagonist of 1980s Mode - exit her room and walk around her house, right? After all, she lives in the same house as her daughter, and "open the protagonist's bedroom door, leave her bedroom, and walk around in her house" functionality has already been added to 202X Mode. However, there are a few obstacles that made me hesitant to promise such a feature:

If Ryoba's bedroom door was lined up with one of the doors that the player can see in the hallway outside of Ayano's bedroom, a lot of things would have to change. Ryoba's room would have to rotate 180 degrees, which would create a lot of problems for the camera system, which expects "forward" to always be a specific direction.

Alternatively, I could just move Ryoba's bedroom door to the left side of the room...but "run to the top-right corner of the room" has been a part of both protagonist's bedroom layouts for years, so forcing the player to run in the opposite direction could be an unwelcome change.

Furthermore, Ayano's parents are gone in 202X Mode, but Ryoba lived with her mother, father, sister, and two grandparents. If Ryoba can leave her bedroom, there is no good excuse for the player to not be able to see Ryoba's family walking around the home and going about their daily business.

All of these things made me really hesitant to let the player leave the protagonist's room in 1980s Mode. However...

What if, when the player wants to exit Ryoba's room, the screen simply fades to black, then fades back in with Ryoba outside of her room? It wouldn't be as slick and seamless as exiting Ayano's room in 202X, but it would immediately solve all of the "how do I connect this room to the rest of the house?" issues.

Okay, that leaves us with one more problem, then - what about Ryoba's family members? I have never asked a character designer to design them, nor have I even named them! How can I begin populating the home with a bunch of characters who haven't even been designed yet?

Well, the answer is to design them one at a time until they're all done. Because the fanbase always seems to express a lot of interest in Ryoba's mother, that's who I decided to start with. I asked an extremely talented artist named BuzzBuzz☆ to make a few designs for Ryoba's mother. After some tweaks and adjustments, a final design was achieved. I was afraid that the fans wouldn't like it, though, so I created a poll asking the fanbase to vote on whether or not the design was any good.

61% of fans loved it, 23% of fans liked it, 11% were neutral, 3% disliked it, and only 1% reported that they hated it. Hey, I think that's a success!

So, the design was modeled and skinned. It is now animation-ready, and as soon as it has a hair model, you might be able to see her in-game as soon as Ryoba gets the ability to leave her bedroom.

Exciting stuff, don't you think? I hope you're going to look forward to it!

Adding "Leave Protagonist's Room" Functionality to 1980s Mode

Comments

Amai's release was kind of an experiment. "If I release a rival with no voice acting or new animations and recycle 1980s Mode features, will it be acceptable?" It wasn't acceptable. Amai's week felt cheap and was a disappointing let-down. Lesson learned: All future rivals will need voice acting, unique animations, and can't just recycle 1980s Mode gameplay/features.

YandereDev

hey Dev! what would you say is the most important thing that you've learnt from the fans' reaction to Amai's release?

teddybabie

I'm very impressed with Tomu's models. I would be happy to use them in-game.

YandereDev

Hey YandereDev. Your hair modeler (Tomu) had created some new outstanding hair styles for all your rivals and even their silhouettes. I was wondering if you are going to review them and input them in your game as they're absolutely amazing!

V

Oh srry, didn't mean to bother

Han

Huh? No. Every playthrough of the game is a separate timeline (unless you repeat the events of a previous playthrough). The timeline where Fun Girl inhabits Ayano's body is not the main timeline, so it doesn't interfere or invalidate any experience you've ever had with the game. Fun Girl explains the cost of achieving Ryoba's "Happy Ending" very clearly, so it's not like any of this happens without warning. If you really want to, you can use a debug command to remove Yandere Simulator's data from your computer's registry, which will make the game "forget" that you ever helped Fun Girl. I want to be polite and respectful, but...if you over-react about the whole Fun Girl thing, I will probably just stop answering any questions involving her.

YandereDev

A lot of people get very outraged about anything that is A.I.-generated. Images, music, voices - they hate it all. It's a very controversial topic to a lot of people. Trust me, the benefits would not outweigh the backlash. Using A.I.-generated voices is the last resort.

YandereDev

Have you thought about trying ai voices

Gia Maldonado

Only in one timeline. And it only happens because the player deliberately goes out of their way to make it happen, knowing the consequences.

YandereDev

Fun Girl is trapped in "the gap between dimensions," meaning that she can't physically exist inside of any dimension. She can observe all worlds and timelines (past, present, and future), but cannot be present in any of them. However, with a vessel to inhabit, she could physically exist at least one world. That's why she sees value in assisting Ryoba. Directly interfering with a timeline won't create a new timeline, but will instead "erase" the branches that would have come from that timeline. By helping Ryoba, Fun Girl erases a timeline that would have contained Ayano, which prevents an opportunity for Fun Girl to "claim" Ayano's existence, allowing her to physically manifest inside of any one timeline of her choice...in the body of Ayano.

YandereDev

Han

I was just thinking it would make more sense for the girls in the intro to be from 202X mode. 😅

V

1. Oh...I was wondering if anyone would notice that (or care about that). Yes, they are the "Rainbow Six" girls, as a nod to the game's early development when those were the only girls in the game. If people actually consider it to be a plot hole, I can change it...but I like it the way it is. 2. Yes. Senpai and his sister will share skin color, hair color, and eye color. 3. Ryoba's mother neglected both of her children. She really didn't put any effort into raising them at all. Ryoba's grandma did most of the work to raise her. 4. Ooooops. I'll fix that in the next build.

YandereDev

Hey YandereDev I got some questions. During the intro, when we see Ayano at the end of the hallway with all the dead girls on the ground their hairstyles are the ones from the girls in 1980's. Are you planning to change them to the current 202X girls? If you changed the skin colour of your senpai and it's the week where senpai's sister comes in, will her skin colour match her brother's? How did Ryoba's mother treat her while she was growing up. Was it different from how Ryoba treated Ayano? (By the way when you hold a garbage bag and go to fix a painting in 1980's mode Ryoba would fix the painting by using the garbage bag as the paint brush.)

V

1. You might be able to walk up to her and press the "A" button to make her say a line of dialogue that changes every week, but I'm not imagining an extremely deep nor meaningful interaction system for her. Same goes for every other character in Ryoba's home. 2. Ryoba's father is mind-broken, so if he appears in-game, he'll just be sitting on a couch, drooling, staring into space. 3. Lack of animations/voice lines.

YandereDev

Omg this sounds so exciting :D

Sweetst4r

Hey YandereDev! I gotta few questions. When ryoba's mother gets added into the game, will we be able to communicate to her or will she just be there. Where is Ryoba's father? Why is it when Ayano or Ryoba fights a delinquent they get in trouble when caught by a student council and the delinquent doesn't suffer any consequences?

V

I'm sorry; I'm a little confused. Are you saying that not every rival needs to have a plot twist? Or not every rival needs to have a bodyguard? Or something else?

YandereDev

I get your POV and I respect it, and I didn't mean every character has to have some big sh*t, just the important characters that we want to know more about. And we know about them more in the rival week (who's related to these characters) it may give us some benefits on the rival week. It would be more interesting if we worked harder to know their secrets, rather than just have them be obvious to us. This is my POV

Han

I can't wait to see the new stuff!! Don't forget to take a break from time to time :3 don't stress yourself (^o^)!!

Han

1. Important improvements that the game needs 2. Important improvements that Amai needs 3. Kizana

YandereDev

you're welcome anytime. Uhhh, I wanna ask you when are you gonna improve Amai's week? I'm really curious, after Kizana or before >.

Han

Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it!

YandereDev

I didn't say I found nothing interested, I just didn't enjoy it as much as Osana's week 😭 but I have to admit, Amai is unique, but I can't shake the feeling that she's still missing so many things, there's a lot of things to do to make her more complete and perhaps more difficult? No offense ofc, I wish I could help you to improve Amai's week more, I want her week to be enjoyable for everyone, but it was just short, boring, not like Osana's week, but I still love them both, and I appreciate your hard work! However for me 1, 5, 7 and 9 are the best ideas! The best additions that we really need in the game!! But take your time, don't rush things and don't put pressure on yoursel (ง •̀_•́)ง!!

Han

Owchie! ;-; I'm sorry that you found nothing interesting or unique at all in all my hard work. Well...here is the current list of changes I plan to make to AMai's week: 1. During the event where Amai speaks to her clubmembers outside of the Cooking Club on Monday, Amai should speak to each club member individually, and they should all have at least one line of dialogue. 2. Each Cooking Club member should have a unique idle pose instead of a generic idle pose. 3. Cooking Club members should wait outside the Home Ec room for Amai and shouldn't begin preparing food until Amai is present. 4. At the bake sale, Cooking Club members should speak to one another when a customer is not around, and perform a happy animation when a customer is buying and eating food at the bake sale. 5. "Living Security Camera" students in the hallways should perform personality-appropriate or club-appropriate animations instead of just sitting and reading books. 6. Throughout the week, Amai needs to interact with other characters aside from Senpai. 7. At least one character unrelated to the Cooking Club needs to play a role in Amai's week. 8. Some of Amai's events need adjusted gameplay and dialogue. 9. During Amai's week, Amai and her clubmembers should clean the Home Ec room.

YandereDev

Well yeah! Amai was a very easy target, easier than Osana, there's nothing interesting in her, nothing unique, for me personally، I didn't enjoy while playing against her as a rival as I enjoyed it with Osana, I think she still needs A LOT of work to make her maybe more interesting? I don't know, her week was more like a "warrior's break" than the war itself. But I guess this is Amai after all, nothing so special about her, but she's still good, and I appreciate that time you spent on her and I'll always support :3!!

Han

In Amai's week, Amai doesn't really interact with anyone except Taro, and only has two events (phone call, club event) where she talks to anyone that is not Taro. Initially, I didn't see any problem with this. However, I now recognize that this actually makes Amai's week feel very cheap and boring. I do acknowledge that other characters aside from the rival will need to have events / attention / focus during that rival's week. Some characters were not designed with deep and meaningful backstories (Kenko is an example) while other characters do have backstories / mysteries / plot twists that I would like to eventually reveal one day. However, I would not like to share any specifics at this exact moment. I know that "Just wait and see" is a boring and unsatisfying answer to receive, but I don't want to spoil my upcoming plans. I'm sorry!

YandereDev

I'm sorry I've asked a lot and I have no idea if you've answered this question before، but I still wanna know. Now will you reveal more information about the students who are related to the rival on their week? For example the Student Council members in Megami's week, the delinquents in Osoro's week, etc. And will Kokona event return with Kizana coming out? Because she's related to her (^o^)!

Han

thanks 4 replying >_X!!

swirled__

no i didn’t know you could do it but i’ve just done it and it worked thanks sorry for bothering 😭

willtaylxrr

Did you link your Patreon and Discord accounts together within the Discord app?

YandereDev

i’ve used a different email for patreon and discord so maybe that’s why it’s not working

willtaylxrr

Being in their proximity is good enough. The effect starts at around 10 meters, and "maxes out" at physical contact. They would definitely know if their Senpai was behind them - they would sense. I'm happy that you're interested in the Aishi family!

YandereDev

Finally a post about the Aishi's family! I do have a stupid question but I've had it for a while now, do Aishi's family have to be physically connected to their senpai or is being around them enough to make them feel alive? For example, if their senpai was behind them and they didn't know it, would that make them feel alive or will they not feel anything at all? It's a complicated question but I really want to know more about the Aishi's family (^o^)!!

Han

Patreon's bot is supposed to hand it out automatically, but sometimes we disable that bot because it causes problems. I'll talk to our server's bot manager and ask him if we've made progress fixing the Patreon bot problem.

YandereDev

hi yan dev how do you join the subscriber only discord channel

willtaylxrr

1. Using the Student Council laptop to put extra money on Amai's Club Leader debit card for her to give to her family instead of spending on the Cooking Club. 2. Ideally, they should all be unique, but this can only be accomplished with help from a 3D modeler. 3. Oh! It exists to communicate to the player that there are other hallways / rooms in this house that are not visible. "Huh? Ryoba lives with her mom, dad, sister, and two grandparents? But where do they all sleep? There are only 3 doors upstairs. And where are the bathrooms?" "Behind that door on the first floor." "Ohhhhh." 4. Saving them for last. 5. Spoiler!

YandereDev

off-topic questions I have a bunch! 1. What counts as "Misappropiating Club Funds" for Amai's expulsion? 2. Will every single item that can be placed in the "Senpai Shrine" be the same items as Ryoba's "Senpai Shrine"? Will they atleast have different looks to the items to keep up with the new generation/symbolize that the items don't belong to the same person? 3. WHAT IS GOING TO BE BEHIN D THAT DOOR NEAR THE STAIRCASE [JK! don't want spoilers lolz] 4. Amai schemes, ya working on em now? So sorry if I'm asking about the Amai schemes a-lot! DX 5. WHY DOES INFO CHAN WANNA SEE GIRLS SUFFER [another JK as I don't want spoilers LOLL but I am curious about that plot ;3!!]

swirled__

Just read the new Amai thing-! Just to let you know, I definitely rely on the schemes feature, this is off-topic but I just finished reading the paragraph about "No schemes". I'm sure plenty of people also rely on that feature.

swirled__

1. It's unlikely. A lot of those rooms would have zero functionality. 2. I hadn't been planning on it. It would require a lot of extra assets from volunteers - either 2D illustrations or 3D models. 3. Nope. 4. A lot of people feel that Amai needs to have more events where she is socializing with other characters, so that's something I'm planning on. However, I don't have a specific number to share at this moment. 5. I'm honestly not sure if I'll decide to go forward with the plan to disable the incinerator for certain weeks.

YandereDev

Hey yanderdev! I have some questions 1. Do you plan on making it available to be able to explore every room in the house? 2. Will there be photos of the family members when they were younger throughout the house? 3. Will Ryobas mother or grandmother be in 2026 mode at all? 4. How many more events do you plan on adding for Amai and what will they be? 5. What week do you plan on making the incinerator out of order?

Baby Crystal

I don't want the two rooms to be the same; re-using assets between the two time periods feels lazy. I think that both time periods should feel distinct from one another.

YandereDev

Why cant you make room from 2026 and 2025 the same room? Their shape is familiar you just need to adjust wall where tv is

Rysiu

I wouldn't mind seeing your fan art! Feel free to share it!

YandereDev

In many cases, it was very direct and straightforward. "Osana is a tsundere. Tsundere anime characters usually have twintails. The most famous tsundere character I know is Asuka from Evangelion, who has orange hair. I will give Osana orange twintails." "Kizana is an actress and a rich girl. Purple is the color of royalty. Rich anime girls usually have 'drill hair'. Audiences throw roses at actresses at the end of a stage play performance. I will give her purple drill hair with rose accessories." It really was that simple. "Oka is a creepy spooky girl. What is creepy and spooky? Darkness and spiders. So she'll have dark hair and dark armwarmers/stockings with a spider web pattern." Honestly, I feel a little embarrassed about how little thought was put into each of them. A lot of people seem to love the designs, though.

YandereDev

Hey Dev how did you imagine all the rival design ? My fav rival is Osana and it would be interresting to know how did you manage to create their apparence

Shiojurn

It's funny because I did my own fan arts of the Aishi lineage and I pictured Ryoba's mother as having a "60s american housewife" aesthetic. Somehow I got it right haha Even the hairband woah ! The differences with mine is that I pictured her with shorter hair and a pop color scheme. Hmm, I did my fan works 2 years ago maybe I should have published them online. Would it interest anyone now ? I don't know. I came up with an aesthetic, a storyline and behavior for each generation. Afaik the first Aishi is similar to what I've pictured, Ryo's Mom as well. But the Taisho and WW2 Aishi seem quite different. Taisho Senpai was a Jingo who died during WW2, Taisho Aishi then disappeared and their daughter became a orphan. She is the "Almost Aishi", which means she is just a depressed common girl who turned yandere upon meeting her Senpai. It's quite different from the spoiled-rotten daughter she is according to canon lol

Skuld

Really into the mom's design. 👀👍🏽
