The changing season had completely wrecked my body, and I felt sick twice within a month. If autumn is coming in your area, take care!
CHANNEL UPDATE
Apparently Patreon now has a community chat function. But since we already have a discord server, it's somewhat redundant.
We are shifting the schedule around a bit, so I can catch up. That means our next three videos will be about: (1) My childhood cinema experience (2) A review of Rush Hour 3 (3) Possibly a review of Ashiap Man.
Work on the kung fu cooking video continues. Since I already talked about God of Cookery on the channel, I want to avoid repeating myself, and focus more on the kung fu and less about the food. So some more rewrite will have to be done before it's ready.
That also means the original planned poll will have to be delayed a bit, since I won't be able to write and edit it. I guess that also means I don't have to watch more Seagal movies. Phew.
Finally, I think I might do another "best horror movies from around the world" video for Halloween. If you have any recommendations, let me know! Either that, or I can take about Mad Fate.
MEDIA TALK
Have you ever seen a movie, and can never find that movie again?
Ever since I started working on this channel, I've been able to track down a lot of forgotten films. The best example was probably I Love Maria, which was largely a forgotten film in the Tony Leung filmography. It finally received a Blu-ray released I think two years ago.
But a lot of movies were simply never released in HD, or even in DVDs, either because of copyright reasons, because of lag of interests, or because the original prints were lost.
The entire Shaolin Popey trilogy was never released on HD, for example. The series was very popular back in the 90s, and way more famous than I knew, actually. Steven Hao, internationally known as Boboho, was likely the most famous child star in Asia back then. Yet, likely due to the fact that all three films were made by different studios in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the series is in limbo, with no HD source available anywhere. Even when TV stations broadcast them, the films are still in SD.
Many of the older Chinese propaganda war movies do have HD sources, as when broadcast on TV, they look pristine. But they were either released in limited quantity, or were never released, likely due to the lack of a market in these old 1960s black and white war films. The people who watch these films likely aren't the type who'd buy physical media, or watch streaming for that matter.
But no, I'm talking about even more obscure movies. Movies that I'm not even sure if they actually exist, or if they were just some fever dream I had.
The one I'm most certain about was an old Chinese documentary about space. It's the type that teaches you about astronomy, the kind of film you'd watch in a classroom setting. I actually watched it in theatres during a school trip, and I likely was the only kid who was interested in it, because I was a nerd.
The only image I remember from the film is an elementary school girl presenting two apples. There's a small one that was grown on Earth, and a big one that was supposedly genetically engineered in space. Yeah, not the most accurate documentary.
I was already into science back then, but I think this movie made love astronomy above other subjects. Funny how the film shaped me and I can barely remember the content of it, let alone finding it.
Second film was actually a Disney production. With some patience I'm pretty sure I can find it. Back in the 90s, my mom bought me quite a few VHS tapes to keep me entertained. She had some good taste, I have to say, because she got me all the classic Chinese animations!
And she also got me a Disney animated short film tape, which contains two animated short films. The A side I still remember vividly: it is Mickey's Christmas Carol. It was my first introduction to the Charles Dicken story, and the title just confused the heck out of me, since Mickey isn't even the main character.
The B side, however, I only have vague memories of. I can't even remember if it was a short film featuring Goofy or Pluto. I remember watching the B side more than the A side, since it's easier to digest, even if child me still knows that the A side is far better in terms of quality. Not that it matters, because irresponsible child me lost the tape. I saw it just a few times, which is why my memory of it is so hazy.
Finally, there's one horror movie that I only caught glimpses of while my mother and I were visiting friends. I remember only a couple of images, and it all happened in and around a public swimming pool. I think it was a film about kind of water contamination, because the image I remember was a woman sitting on the side of the pool with her legs in the water. The contaminant came into contact with her legs, and the lower half of her body was transformed into a blue mess. It sounds way more horrific than it looks, because the special effects is no more complicated than wrapping her leg in some really silly looking foam tum with wrinkles.
I think all of the characters were white, so it's definitely not a locally made amateur film, despite its amateur look. Either it was some bargain bin movies. Or I dream the entire thing up after watch jaws.
Anyway, that was some of the movies I saw when I was a child, that I cannot find again. If you have seen these movies, let me know! Although I seriously doubt that.
Have you seen any movies that you cannot find? In any case, I'll see you in our next video, coming soon!
