In a way, I think the release of McDull marks the beginning of the post-2000s Hong Kong cinema. Movies made in Hong Kong became much more interested in domestic topics. Gone were the days of international action stars. Hong Kong movies became something dedicated to only an Hong Kong audience.
That, of course, doesn't mean the films cannot be enjoyed by other people. In fact, I think this direction offers a great opportunity to see the city from a distance. If you have an interest in the cultures and memories of Hong Kong, McDull is a truly fascinating watch.
