Movies made in Hong Kong became much more interested in domestic topics. Gone were the days of international action stars. Hong Kong movies became something dedicated to only an Hong Kong audience.
That, of course, doesn't mean the films cannot be enjoyed by other people. In fact, I think this direction offers a great opportunity to see the city from a distance. If you have an interest in the cultures and memories of Hong Kong, McDull is a truly fascinating watch.

I think I agree about missing the red. Which could be complicated, since (I'm guessing) bold red as a color has some specific cultural connotations for chinese-diaspora people and also it was a similar red to youtube's logo, so I understand that the decision to drop it might be motivated by more than aesthetics. But low-contrast colors and beige especially are psychologically inclined to not be noticed, and it does make things lack a lot of pop and make it seem a bit less... 'magazine' is a good description, actually.

2023-07-28 14:51:06 +0000 UTCNow that I've seen several videos in the new presentation format, I have to say I find it a bit dull, at least on desktop. It blends too easily with the rest of the page, while the bold black and red provided better stops. Not saying is a bad thing: I feel now watching the video is a bit like reading a book, while before was more like reading a magazine. The video, as always is great. You made me feel nostalgia for a city I've never lived in. :)
