The attached image shows the old character sprites (left side) paired with the new ones (right side). The old system I used for rendering them was painful to manage and update. The new system I created matches the other visuals better, has more consistent lighting and is much easier to change and update. Another bonus is that some interesting metadata can be generated at the same time. Another post about that later.
Converting all the characters with their poses (roughly 150 combinations in total) took a while, but now it's done. I also did some other changes along the way. For example, Alice got new casual clothes (for now) and Kate's hair was tweaked to match the CG's better. And James no longer looks like he has high blood pressure all the time (although I guess that would be realistic as long as he is working for Melissa...). I'm mostly happy with the new versions, but the old ones still have their charm. The former, semi-cartoon style exaggerates mouth, lips, and eyes which sometimes makes the expressions feel a bit more intense. But let me know what you think.
