White dudes everywhere are nutting to this conversation

Some resources that helped me understand racism as structural rather than just interpersonal: Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race (Reni Eddo-Lodge), Good Ally (Nova Reid), Decolonizing Therapy (Jennifer Mullan), and White Tears / Brown Scars (Ruby Hamad).

I’m sorry, that sounds genuinely painful, and I can understand why it felt awful to be on the receiving end of that. At the same time, a lot of the anger people of colour express towards white women is rooted in real experiences of harm, power, and complicity, often far beyond any one relationship. I think it’s important to hold that context alongside personal hurt, rather than treating them as equivalent.

I left this comment on the YouTube video but I feel it’s important to leave it here too. Given what's happening globally right now, the framing felt out of touch for me. Talking about racism and oppression without centring power, history, and current realities landed as flattening rather than nuanced. As a racialised person it also landed as a bit of a gut punch for me, especially while training in psychotherapy in the UK, where racism within institutions is very much a live and painful issue (and my training institution is being sued for racism). I also feel it's emboldening people in the comments section to not check their own power/ privilege.

This was enlightening. Two of my closest friends for 20+ years are Puerto Rican. Over the past 6 years they began to express their disdain for white women (which I am). They would say how awful white women are and then sometimes say ‘except you’ but it felt really bad. I felt like I couldn’t say anything because of my race being representative of the oppressor. There were many other things going on in those friendships and ultimately I walked away from the friendships for other reasons but that was just one symptom of some of the bigger issues going on in my relationships with them.

I feel like Berto and I may be telepathic because I was also thinking of Borat and the Borat voice when he said "my wife." I really enjoyed this podcasr podcast. I would say financial issues are probably in the top 3 arguments between couples.
