The conversation about Humberto's daughter and her feelings about making a choice resonated with me. In the past I see that I often preferred the longing and hopefulness... and the fantasy of all my options before a choice is made and that can make me hesitant to choose. It makes me think of a quote by Anna Freud: "In our dreams, we can have our eggs cooked exactly how we want them, but we can't eat them." I need the reminder that magic may be satisfying, but reality is nourishing. So when I choose, I may be only eating the one item on the menu that I chose (and not the other plethora of options) but I am nourished and given vitality by my choice. On the flip side...if I hold onto the fantasy that I can order every menu item... and find myself just salivating and staring at the menu... then I am starving. I have to remind myself to pick the kind of pain I prefer. Do I prefer to dream and starve? Or do I prefer to grieve the loss of the other options in my choice, but be nourished and brought to life?
