And, where my thought actually started, it’s so incredible how resilient a person can be in the face of trauma. Going anywhere new was terrifying and there she was giving me her cell so she could send me pics of Puffin. Her strength is hard for me to even grasp. To just BE in the world in the way Chanel was being in the world is incomprehensible to me. How could someone endure something so violent and deplorable and find the fortitude to become a stronger person than before? What an incredible woman and role model I always looked forward to Chanel and Tiffany (they usually traveled as a pair ¨̮ ) coming to pick up a new foster. Her smile is forever etched in my brain. Chanel was always so gracious and kind despite a rapist trying to steal that from her. We all have opportunities every day to make someone’s life better. We have no idea what other people are going through, choose kindness. Let’s take care of each other, because we deserve it, we really, really do!

I got to know Chanel and Tiffany so well when they fostered dogs at Muttville. I was the Volunteer & Foster Manager at the time and, I’m not being hyperbolic, she always had the biggest smile when she’d come to the rescue. I cried reading that section of the book. I have so many texts with Chanel and with Tiffany and I was always playful and fun and they met me with the same. It’s really incredible, and a bit overwhelming, to find out you helped a victim find herself again. Wow.

for future/present deserving listeners: /Know My Name/ by Chanel Miller is a very powerful and moving read, the audiobook version is read by the author and you can read or listen for free with a library card on apps like libby (overdrive) and hoopla
