10 Tips on Counseling Men (2015 Rerun)

Comments

The last 10 years of my life now makes a lot more sense knowing this information. I’m Australian and in 2015 I wasn’t paying much attention to what was happening in the United States. 2016 onwards and all kinds of weird things started happening to the point where even I started saying very bad things against women and feminism. Fortunately for me I had made enough female friends that three of them spoke to me privately and said “we know who you are and we know this is not like you so what’s going on?“ I had a complete breakdown in 2020 and one of those three women became my girlfriend and she encouraged me to go through therapy. To cut a long story short, I wasn’t angry against women and feminism, I was terrified that they were exhibiting the same traits and behaviours as the men who caused me the greatest pain and harm. When I was a child I had a lot of boys and men push so much pressure onto me to play with the other boys that I broke, which gave me CPTSD. At the same time, the girls and women who I was more comfortable with and tried to play with, they could see an entirely different side of me and never gave up. From 2016 to 2020 traditional media and social media went bonkers with opinions that I had never heard before, which seemed insanely aggressive, due to US politics and US cultural trends. This podcast explained many of the origins of those trends and opinions and I never knew that they even existed. I had never seen or heard or experienced such anger and aggression from women against men before in my life and that stark contrast to what I was accustomed to is what scared me the most. My biggest piece of advice is: do not get fooled by angry cultural trends, social media fears, or politics. What scares most men is much the same as what scares most women. There ain’t that much different to how our brains work. How we think moulds to how society treats us.
