Dr. Honda, I wonder if the eye movements in EMDR might be a form of self hypnosis. Do you have an opinion on my concept that you’re willing to share?

I have been receiving treatment for PTSD for 18 months now that is a combination of talk therapy and EDMR. I have had maybe just under 10 sessions dedicated specifically to EMDR. I would Describe it as a practised form of physical and mental mindfulness, that seeks to to name negative cognitions that have been cemented in the sub or unconscious and encoded as sensory data. It is like learning how to observe safely from a distance, by focusing on specifically on the physicality of the present. I like to think of it as exploring where your body “stores” the trauma. If you can “work” it out of your system, by revisiting your traumatic memory, naming the negative message it was encoded as, you can then re-write that narrative. It actually feels entwined with schema therapy IMO
