Dr. K has been a pied piper and a charismatic leader as well as a gifted psychotherapist with a unique foothold in a needful community. His Harvard colleagues had ethical concerns from the jump. I wrote to you with concerns about him before Reckful died.

I bet he's preparing one and needs a little time

I think Kirk didn't want to correct him, it was like a I don't agree but I don't think it's worth it correcting that to ensure a good flow of the conversation

Emily

Dr Kirk-- idk how to contact you for this, but I'm taking a chance in the comment section. Please make an episode on the election results because a lot of us are feeling disillusioned and lost. I really value your input and I know many other people do. Thanks!! 🩷

One hour in when dr. honda gets angry at dr k's bullies on his behalf, it's almost like dr. k has a short circuit, calling it "doing the shit i do" and then intellectualizing it as if he doesn't believe it's anymore than a magic trick that works even if you know it's a trick. Eventually dr. k softens but his reaction reads as sad and unsure that any adult could actually care and be angry at the bullies who hurt him in the past.

This was such a interesting meeting of worlds - but also a surprisingly relevant topic for me. That said - I’ve always struggled with the PD lens of trauma reactivity. It’s not a very empathetic starting point in understanding trauma reactions to focus on common cognitive distortions. Yes - we need to have awareness and understand reactivity but isn’t it more useful to describe conditions starting from etiology after all? Syndromes are for symptoms we don’t fully understand.. Attachment theory seems to cover that nicely, and schemas the rest. I think there’s a reason people find these disorders so difficult to understand - and that’s because we start from a convoluted, backwards point of understanding. Asking myself recently; “what do I feel, what do I want, what do I need” has being life changing in beginning to address the physical effects of chronic trauma recently. Ignoring pain and struggles that others were either unwilling or unable to hold space for has done substantial damage to my ability to live each day. There is a great deal of grieving there as well as I allow myself even to ask those questions. It seems as if I am shifting from dependent to avoidant. I have chronic illness and my parents are my primary support. They love and show immense care for me, but they struggle with the reality of my struggle. I’ve been seeing things with more clarity lately in evaluating their treatment of my chronic illness and understanding better their respective inability to attune. I could never understand how my loving, supportive parents seemed so unempathetic or responsive, to the point of what others have described as gaslighting. Part of this is a invisible illness of disability struggle, but they would prefer to pretend it is not happening and pull away from me it seems. They have also been so busy taking care of everyone else they are burnt out also. Some of that shit-life syndrome Dr. K learned about in his line of work. I turned on “Ordinary People” for whatever reason the other day, and had a horrifying realization that my family was not so unlike that one. The mother is a bit extreme and it is difficult to empathize with her character considering the nature of their trauma - but many of the patterns are there.

I discovered Dr. Honda and this Patreon from this episode. I'd been following HealthyGamerGG but never felt like anything was really that relevant, until this episode. It's been very reassuring to finally stick a label on myself, paradoxically. I feel as though I now have permission to be me. Edit: some commenters here seem to have been sucked in by media hyperbole. After you've seen ten "end of the world!1!1!!" elections, it won't seem so bad. You still have agency. You can still have some control over your own life. Life will go on.

My experience with Dr K and his channel and All his “courses” were generally ok. But in hindsight he’s often quite dismissive and a little inflammatory. For example he has no clue about autism. Used a lot of pejoratives to describe “melt downs” as temper tantrums etc. a lot of ableist language too. Seems to want to be the go to for all things psych but doesn’t have mastery over a lot of it so I consider him a jack of all trades but a master of nothing really, in the context of his licensed profession anyway.

A very sad day. Came here for the comfort.

Love the episode, but the part about "if there's physical abuse, the personality disorder will be BPD" (said by Healthy Gamer) didn't feel accurate, after having listened to *a lot* of Psychology in Seattle episodes. Also, today feels like the beginning of the end of the world. I feel so bad for America and very scared for all of the world.

Good episode! Dr K was my go-to psychology channel, but it didn't feel like it was meant for me. It's a channel for men only or it seemed to be back when I watched it. I have heard a lot of generalizations about women having soo much social support and other generalizations from his channel. Not me! I might have AvPD even but my therapist doesn't like to diagnose. I seem to have some personality disorder. Never had a friend, not close to my family, no achievements or career... I'm in my 30s. Anyway, I am glad I found PiS and I did find it from that Dr K licencing video.

Looks like a lot people were very angry about the Genocide which is why Kamala lost. No doubt about that. She messed up. Turns out people don't appreciate genocide on innocent civilians, women, and children. So much that they chose Trump over that, either by voting for him or not voting at all.

Well chosen topic for the healthy gamer comunity, I think it might've resonated with loads. Also, can't help but send my condolences to all Americans - as a European. What happened this week will affect the whole world. My faith in humanity is lost. Kirk I would love if you could adress dealing with negativity after the election results. I guess it's a grieving process.
