I Have Dyslexia

Comments

I don't have dyslexia, but I can so relate to the phone number and address thing. It's so weird, because I generally have really good memory, but when it comes to random numbers I'm almost comically bad at it. The only phone number I know is my own and that is only because it had a really nice number pattern. I've carried that number through several phone contracts now and even paid extra for that, just so I don't have to memorize another one😅 I also do the pattern on a key pad thing for pin numbers and additionally I will work out some mathematical pattern or something similar that is in the number, because that is the only way I can remember. I do recommend that technique, it has been incredibly helpful to me. It is very reassuring though to hear you describe your struggle with that, good to know I'm not the only one xD

I have what I’ve called mild dyslexia but I don’t even think it’s as bad as yours. I practiced with my mom and improved significantly which led me to not having accommodations and that later became detrimental to my mental health as I was struggling with AP classes in high school. I don’t read syllables but I do have the experience of reading ahead and having to go back. Sometimes it is faster to read aloud but on my good days I can read faster in my head. I’m not sure how to set myself up for success in that regard.

I can completely relate to the LOTR books thing. I was pressured so hard to read those at a way too young of an age and it does nothing to cultivate a love of reading! The story is phenomenal, the writing is tough to consume.

Dr Honda - I have dyscalculia, but I’m a really really fast reader. I can read a book a day no problem. I didn’t get 1/4 through Lord of the Rings because of all the stupid names and brooks and stuff, I TOTALLY agree with you! Thank you for this episode, I’m currently undergoing testing for dyscalculia and the calculations part was so awful I had to take a break after 5 questions that I couldn’t answer. Cue horrendous flashbacks and a breakdown. I don’t think people who don’t have learning disabilities understand how that shame goes so so so deep.

was going to comment the same thing!

I respect you more after each episode I listen to. This one, of course, included.

I love this episode! Thank you so much for sharing. It made me admire your resilience - here you are, with your PhD! The way you found work-arounds, wow. My partner has dyslexia, so we had a whole conversation about it after I listened to this episode, and she had an almost identical experience to you. It made me understand her a lot better. Also, have you read the children's book Thank You, Mr. Falker, by Patricia Polacco? It is about a little girl with dyslexia. I read it as a kid and still remember it to this day. Keep being awesome, Dr. H ☺️

Hey, just finished listening. About the „people might respect me less“ thing. Dude. I respect you even more. You had a disadvantage and you still managed to get a bachelor, master, phd, become professor, write friggin books…. You fought the uphill battle and won! Heaps of respect for you!

Amazing, how I found out that I have dyslexia... with Doctor Honda finding out 😂 I have all the criteria. I am a photographer ( of course), love potcast, movies, and tiktok I found my knowledge in visual arts. ( Sorry my English i m from Costa Rica) Today I'm sad that Trump won😩

Eyleen

Ahhhh Dr H - I was also diagnosed as an adult, and my experience is SO similar to yours - word for word at every life stage. I found diagnosis has helped me a lot over the years - I have always intuitively used various coping mechanisms, but now I can identify them and know how to really tweak my life to suit me best. For the most part....

I meant to mention this in my original comment: a song I’ve been leaning on a lot throughout this discovery process is “Flesh and Bone” by The Killers.
