The Psychology of Elon Musk (Chapter 5 - Saving Humanity)

Comments

I wanted to comment on how Elon didn't show grief for the loss of his child. Let me start by saying I think Elon is a reprehensible person, I am not defending him. I am just commenting to add the perspective of an autistic person when it comes to how we display emotion. Because we process emotion in different ways than neurotypical people it can appear on the surface that we do not feel anything when the opposite is true. Some of us have alexithymia, which complicates how we process emotions. We do not know exactly what we are feeling. Since we access our emotions differently there can be a delayed response as well. This is why we get labeled as lacking empathy, because we do not mirror back emotions in an intuitive way. I remember hearing one late diagnosed autistic woman whose mom was answering questions about her childhood for her assessment. Her mom said to her that all of a sudden so many things made sense as she answered questions about how her daughter reacted to emotional situations. Her mom told her "When I told you that grandma had died and you just had no emotional reaction I thought perhaps you were a monster". That was a staggering thing to hear from a fellow autistic person.

Thank you for mentioning the paradox to have more children in times of climate change!

What you said about people undervaluing the business side of tech businesses is spot on. There's a fun sexist element wherein Tech Bros will hire females such as myself to do their marketing and act like it's not really necessary or that they could do a better job of it but just don't happen to have the time, etc. Kinda like how women were the secretaries and file clerks of the past businesses.

I am pretty "balanced" on my opinion about Elon. The convo around privileging the inventory and discrediting the business man is interesting. Coming from a business and entrepreneurship background and education, I have adopted the viewpoint that business people are typically realize huge success at the cost of oppressing others in one way or another. So, even though I see how how impactful business skills are on success--it feels better to praise an "inventor" type.

I’ve become a patron again after swapping to YouTube membership just for this series. I have feelings about needing multiple subscriptions to have access to your content (frustration, sadness and feeling unvalued) but this content is so great. Thanks for making it. I’m in my first trimester of my pregnancy and lying on the couch listening to this helps with the nausea so much! Love you both 💚
