TToB: Children with prenatal exposure to general anesthesia are more likely to have concerning behaviors. Tough or Bluff???

Comments

It’s TOUGH! Researchers have found that prenatal exposure to general anesthesia is associated with a 31% increased risk of developing a disruptive or internalizing behavioral disorder during childhood. (DOI: 10.1016/j.bja.2024.01.025)

Agreed. That was my first thought: that it’s tough but due to correlation not causation.

Julia Smith

I would guess tough not based on causality, but occurrence at the same time, thinking of the plethora of reasons why a person would go under anesthesia while pregnant. I would guess other health based problems (somatic or mental) are more prevalent in that group too thus emerging behavioural problems of the offspring.
