I really loved to hear you guys offer such a nuanced view on ESAs and touch on the difference between an ESA and a trained service animal. I work in a Short Term Crisis Residential center, and we have had a lot of issues with ESAs who got a “license” basically through an online site. Namely, we’ve gotten quite a few that were quite untrained and ended up causing both their owners and other clients MORE stress. They would bark and lunge at staff and clients, whimper and stress out the owners, and get restless because the owner likely wasn’t walking them as often as the animal would like (as clients can’t leave the property without a staff or an approved escort). I love animals and would enjoy petting the pups, but it just wasn’t conducive to recovery. We ultimately had to start requiring a letter from within the last year from a PCP or psychiatrist.

Oh I’m looking forward to listening to this! I had a medical alert dog for two years before the pandemic, I’ve basically been in for 4 years now so he’s just a pet now, but I found it so stressful going to public places with him because people would come over ALL the time! People would come sit next to us in cafes to try and touch him and talk to him, kids would run up in supermarkets, in shops people would always try and get his attention or come speak to me about him. I’m an introvert and I hated it, I feel like that’d be a nightmare for someone with anxiety
