TToB: Narcissistic traits are associated with lower rates of depression. Tough or Bluff???

Comments

That is exactly what I was thinking

Rye

Voted tough because I think they lack self reflection and the awareness of their own inner worlds making them appear more shallow and superficial, everything is good, I am awesome, I am doing great. Admitting to depression is admitting to your own emotions, sadness (emotions the narcissist might not even be aware of because of the need to keep a perfect facade at all times) and that everything isn’t perfect and that you aren’t without ‘flaws’.

If it's self reported depression then it makes sense.... Maybe the lack of personal insight stopts them from realising about their unmet needs?

Research paper does not mention PHQ-9 or depression scale in the text. Depression is very difficult to identify in survey setting. Why we have so low PPD rates...

It’s TOUGH! It’s hard to know why. Any speculations? (DOI: 10.1016/j.jrp.2024.104465)

I'm gonna say tough because if we're only talking about traits, then there's many narcissistic traits that ironically could be beneficial for someone's mental health. Once one has reached a disordered level of narcissism, then it's probably extremely high for depression.

He calls you a narcissist? Seems harsh coming from a loved one. 😕

My husband calls me everyday how narcissistic I am (which I’m might be in a low percentage) but the thing is; he doesn’t know how depressed I am and I’ve been most of my life. I think the lack of sense of myself and the poor identification of my feelings it make me look narcissistic… but I am more depressed about how not emotionally intelligent I am. Help!

Bluff. Anecdotally, I have seen narcissistic people slip into depression but I've also seen narcissistic people feed off the joy out of others. Not sure which type of narcissist is a majority. But without that statistical awareness, I would say 50-50. And I'm sure, there's a high possibility I'm wrong, in which case, it will be good to become aware of the statistical facts.

Arnica Clearfield

I think it depends on the type of narcissistic traits. Grandiosity is the antithesis of depression. They’re opposite ends of the spectrum so a covert narcissist may express more depressive traits where overt likely would express less. But I’ll say tough.

I can't wait to get the answer for this - just because I see so many comments this early. I hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!

Higher rates!

When you’re so out of touch with your feelings it more likely shows up as anxiety, somatic symptoms rather than depression.
