The Psychology of Josh Powell (Chapter 7 - Theories)

Comments

Not a prosecutor, but a massive true crime fan. I also work directly with lawyers and have been told I think like them. I can’t say specifically what held these prosecutors back, but no body cases can be hard to prosecute even when the circumstantial evidence seems to point in one direction. A good defense attorney can get evidence from being admitted at trial and find plausible explanations for things that are still allowed in (for example the reaction to Susan’s cell phone could be explained as shock. Not saying I believe that, just that evidence can be seen in different ways). I think we’re all pretty convinced that Casey Anthony killed her daughter, but a jury found her not guilty. That could have happened here if the evidence wasn’t pretty conclusive. And what if they had charged him quickly, had the trial, and didn’t convict…and then he still killed the kids. Then people would be saying they should have waited to charge him and to prosecute.

Thank you! I was trying to figure out who he may have been taking about

Talia

I really hope berto finds his cat back 🫂💜

I would like to hear the psychological reasoning behind the lying / not answering / providing ridiculously "not normal" answers to the police, reporters, and family. It is incomprehensible to me that a person can keep up such a blatant ruse. I think the inanity of his answers threw everyone off, which imo is common when someone is overtly dishonest. Gaslighting, deception, and outright dishonesty is not "normal" human behavior for extended periods of time. Psychs and PhDs please explain!

AC

I wonder if the daycare person knew that Susan was paranoid about Josh killing her so she just made up a possible carbon monoxide poisoning in hopes that the police would bust in & catch him. The only issue with that is why would she not tell them afterwards that Susan was paranoid & confiding in her.

MK Average

He actually didn’t say raise your taxes to do anything. He talked about tax dollar allocation and, at most, taxing billionaires their fair share.

CJ

Interesting until you wanted to raise my taxes to do it. How about we encourage non profits to target these issues?

Rebecca Welch

I'm curious why Kirk doesn't think he's a psychopath? Also I think you got your true crime wires crossed at one point and referred to Jodi Arias when you meant Casey Anthony? 🤣

Rachael Rutkowski

I also think that he did not intend to kill her in that night. I think he gave her an accidental overdose, she died of complications (hence the mess on the couch and bloody cough spray) and he had to dispose of her body to save himself. That's where I think the plan went off the rails, and why nothing from that point on makes any sense.

maghen farris

Assuming the hit & run theory is right, he may have been drugging her with the muscle relaxers at a low daily dose to establish a build up that would be detected in a post-mortem toxicology report. This would help strengthen a medical examiner's judgement towards the likelihood that she veered out of her lane while biking and collided with a vehicle. Also throws her credibility into question, which reduces scrutiny on Josh's involvement.

maghen farris

The prevailing local theory is that he dumped her down one of the many old abandoned mine shafts down south.

Ines Olujic

He's was way too lazy to dig a hole, especially during a snow storm. Dumpster maybe. Or some ravine. Not going to be a lot of hikers or hunters to stumble upon her body right away but lots of wildlife. This case is so disturbing. Thank you for handling it with care. It's a good example to set.

Jennifer Helm

I just Googled their address and the Wells Fargo location where she worked. She did not work at the large office downtown but a branch on Amelia Earhart Drive. According to Google Maps it's a 46 minute bike ride or 14 minute drive from their house. Insane to think this man would make his wife bike 45+ minutes through a blizzard. He really lacks perception of what is normal

Ines Olujic

I have a photo in Nevada “next gas station 179 miles”
