TToB: Hypochondriacs (those with health anxiety disorder) live longer. Tough or Bluff???

I know this is an older one, but I'm a newer patron and have health anxiety, and I have something to add that I haven't seen discussed a lot. Sometimes I don't get things checked out because I have no ability to distinguish between what's a big deal and what's me freaking out over nothing. In an attempt to manage my anxiety and use coping strategies, things can fall through the cracks.

2024-05-22 20:40:49 +0000 UTCIt’s BLUFF! Research has found that they have an 84% higher risk of dying, and on average, they died 5 years earlier than others. (DOI: 10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2023.4744)

2024-05-22 02:42:59 +0000 UTCI’ve been anxious over so many perceived abnormalities, which turned out to be nothing, that it has at times consumed my life. My anxiety and fears have led years of poor sleep and stress and an unhealthy lifestyle. My anxiety is ironically affecting my health and manifesting in ways only anxiety can. I don’t believe that the way I live is conducive to a long and healthy life.

2024-05-21 21:12:17 +0000 UTCI said bluff bc the body needs a certain amount of bacteria on it and in it and the impulse to kill bacteria can have detrimental effects to the whole body system. I hope that makes sense, it's just my thoughts spilled out and not polished

2024-05-21 15:03:12 +0000 UTCthere is obviously the added stress that is pointed out already but I feel like the isolation that comes with it is also a big part. If you're afraid everything will get you sick, you surely avoid social situations, sports, many parts of being healthy and a human

2024-05-21 14:22:50 +0000 UTCThis one’s not easy! But I voted tough, because I imagine hypochondriacs would maybe get diagnosed earlier with things like cancer?

2024-05-21 12:39:04 +0000 UTCI said bluff, but it could go either way. The anxiety and maybe not being able to be believed (or believe yourself) could lead to a shorter lifespan, but if you’re in the hospital all the time you may catch things that otherwise would’ve been missed
