TToB: When you’re listening to someone share a story, it’s best to just listen and not share a similar story. Tough or Bluff???

Tough. Active listening is a learned skill but I think if we listen to others they will listen to us too!

Communication is complicated, but generally speaking, a number of studies have demonstrated that although people believe that reciprocal self-disclosure is considered bad form, it often is received as validating and appreciated. But it really depends on what’s being said. So, I recommend listening very well, asking questions, being compassionate, and occasionally sharing a similar story to provide empathy and to further the conversation.
