(Wip) The Tiger in Me
Added 2023-06-23 23:43:08 +0000 UTCA recent painting I’ve been working on for my show coming up in… 2 weeks??? Wow it’s around the corner! Definitely the largest thing I’ve painted, first canvas I’ve painted too. Based on a screenshot from a Frosted Flakes commercial. In the original image there’s a boy diving for the catch and Tony is his shadow.
I have been thinking of the title of this piece as also the series title, The Tiger in Me. It really gets at why I’m interested in making this work. Like, thinking about how I, like a lot of kids of the 90s, was really taught to love and identify with these brand icons. It’s tough to say whether all these companies advertising to kids really knew what they were doing. Yes, they wanted us to love Tony and love Frosted Flakes, but to what end? I think my goal with this project would be to make a Kellogg’s rep feel uncomfortable. Like “yes, I do love Tony, I’m in love with Tony, isn’t that what you want?”
Anyway…. That’s the primer on this new painting show. I’ll be sharing more as I finish works. This one’s aaalmost done, need to touch up those fugly cleats.
