Doctor Who Season 11 - Ep 2 - The Ghost Monument

Still reeling from their first encounter, can the Doctor and her new friends stay alive long enough, in a hostile alien environment, to solve the mystery of Desolation? And just who are Angstrom and Epzo?

Doctor Who Season 11 - Ep 2 - The Ghost Monument

In Classic Who, there were several times when the Doctor had three companions traveling with him. The First Doctor and Second Doctor always had two and sometimes three companions. It was the Third and the Fourth who usually just had a single female companion. Then suddenly there were three new companions with nothing in common who began the Fifth Doctors’ era. This season always reminds me of that ‘crowded TARDIS’ era . Often character development seems kind of stuck because there isn’t enough time to focus on everyone.

I started watching Who episodes as they were broadcast with this season. I had binged NuWho in prep and really liked it, but I loved this season from the start. I think at first it’s just what it looks like — I just love it. And the organic TARDIS, I love it, too. I think this episode is mostly about how this era is not about one character being the big savior: it’s about how we need each other, it’s about family—blood family and chosen family. This ep is about navigating how some of us talk about this stuff a lot, and some of us don’t talk about it enough. The ep is all about exploring character. It is a really different feel — it feels to me more like how people I know IRL try to get to know one another and share, and don’t share. When we get to know one another, it’s a long, slow process. RTD and Moffatt often feels cartoony to me. Chibnall’s characters remind me of people I know. I love lots of Murray Gold’s music (though not nearly as much in the RTD2 era), but I also really love Segun Akinola’s music, especially as it develops and changes over the episodes and seasons.
