I would like to point out something that you didn't seem to catch onto,and it addresses something which is never properly brought up in the anime. In essence, you seemed to keep mixing up SMILE with Smiley. SMILE is the artificial Devil Fruit developed by Caesar Clown whereas Smiley was the chemical weapon that was condensed (again by Caesar) and brought to life by being "fed" a Devil Fruit (like Spandam's elephant-sword or Miss Monday's dog-cannon.) That's why when Smiley died the Devil Fruit it "ate" respawned in the bag of apples nearby. On a side-note, while Caesar developed the SMILEs Doflamingo was selling to Kaido, the Devil Fruit Momo ate was made by Vegapunk, and it was being kept here because he had deemed it a failure.
