well, my current theory is that satella is an aspect of emilia that she subconsciously rejected. as such, satella is less thought and more all the things that emilia suppressed and eventually rejected. an incomplete being with all wants and no reason, which is quite the tragic existence. in my mind, that explains her ultra-focused single mindedness regarding subaru and his saying he will save her when he was engulfed. totally just a theory i made up while watching this episode, i have not read manga or researched anything cause i dont want to be a victim of spoilers.
