Bert enjoyed his position as a town's executioner. Since the peaceful town didn't have many heads to be chopped off, he did some occassional flogging, helped obtaining confessions from petty thieves, but was mostly used as the rat chatcher's assistant. Free meals and his own seat at the bar quickly lead to problems with alcohol abuse. After one particularly nasty delirious drinking night, when he could swear he was seeing a white ape and an armed rat-man, he's decided to drop his axe and enter the Cloister of St Alphonzo, straight into the caring hands of sister superior Vivian.
