Weekly Developer Log #7: Ship Builder Kickstarter

Hello everyone!

It's a bit late (It was supposed to be on Friday) but I have an update to show, today I brought 3 images. If you missed the last developer log please check the link if you are interested: Weekly Developer Log #6: Ship Builder Kickstarter | Patreon

Workflow changes

After thinking for a while I decided to change my workflow, I was making a rough blockout on Blender and then exporting it to Zbrush to add the details. This workflow is impractical because if I ever find a problem later on, it would be harder to change the design I had chosen. So I will block the whole ship on Blender, export pieces, and work on them separately after all of them are blocked.

Image #1

The first Image shows what I'm working on Blender at the moment. As mentioned in previous posts the mid-section is repeatable that's why it's straight from top to bottom, this will ensure that you are able to increase height and the ship length. Each wall section would have 55mm, this gives plenty of space for 32mm miniatures (but you probably want to store them horizontally). The miniature on top is a 32mm scale model by Duchmogul (I used it a lot to scale my miniatures at the start of my journey as a sculptor, it was already loaded on my default blender file, therefore I placed it for comparison).

I'm still going to adjust the lower part of the hull to give it a bit more curve.

Image #2 and #3

These images are my test print result using the same resin as before.

As you can see in the pictures there's still bending but less. After reading a bit this could be solved using an appropriate resin that has low shrinkage. Another idea that I had is, during the assembly glue some Popsickle sticks to prevent the model to bend and also to give more resistance to the model.

Another thing that you can see is that my current supports failed at the corners and resulted in a  rounded shape.

All these problems might be solved if you use a FDM printer. I will focus on these pieces later on.

That's it for this week's update, hope you have liked it, if you have any comments, please let me know.

Best regards,

Ivo
