CH873 Mora's Perspective

Laying down in his bed, Mora stared at the ceiling above, not spending the night enjoying any of the books or games he’d been given but instead lost in his thoughts now that he was finally home, being back in Stonewall reminding him of the disaster he’d left it in.

There were no signs of Bloom’s carnage left, Ben having fixed it all but the memories were still there, eating at him and his shortcomings. His own childishness, something he was usually good at managing, had been the cause of that disaster and he had nobody to blame but himself, even if he knew that wasn’t entirely fair for him either.

He was young and inexperienced, still figuring out how to be a member of the world he lived in and struggling with it each day, with even trying to fully understand how to connect to others being a challenge that was only manageable thanks to the people who wanted to connect with him back making the effort he was failing in.

And he knew that parts of it would get better with time too, but only parts. Inexperience was one thing that could be overcome as he learned more about the world and how he’d fit in it, when he wasn’t even one year old it felt like everything was still new. The real issue was that he didn’t actually know if time would solve all of his problems.

He was something that shouldn’t have existed. Something he knew that shouldn’t have existed. A child spirit, the only one in the world which was a fact that left an unavoidable question in his mind. Would he ever be able to grow up?

That wasn’t something spirits did after all and he didn’t know what it would mean for him to do such a thing. Technically, as a great spirit, there was nowhere else to grow. He knew he wasn’t a mortal despite certain similarities, his attributes were fixed by his very nature and while his appearance was that of a child, he could change the shape of the mana that made up his body if he so desired but that wouldn’t fix where the real issue lied. His mind.

The mental structure of a spirit warped to fit the shape of a young incubus and creating something that was simultaneously both, what he needed was to one day mature beyond what he currently was but he didn’t even know if that was possible. He didn’t think with a brain, he wouldn’t experience the things that changing with age and puberty would bring and he had no biology to help shape his nature. The odds seemed far too good that he’d be forced to stay that way forever, a victim of the careless experiment that was his creation and a fact that he wanted to escape.

While not feeling rushed to grow up, he didn’t want to be eternally young either. He didn’t want his more youthful impulses to affect his decision making and he didn’t want to be causing problems for the people around him forever. More importantly, he didn’t want to make those same people eventually grow to hate him if he couldn’t change.

Neither Thera nor Ben had blamed him for what had happened, they’d both been supportive and helpful in trying to make it right but even if he tried his best, Mora couldn’t help but worry that he’d make a mistake of a similar scale again. How many times could he mess up before they’d get tired of him? How much could he fail before they’d get rid of him too like the life and death spirits before them?

He absolutely didn’t want that. He liked being with them. Liked living with them and Sonya and liked being able to spend time with Delair and her family too. Compared to his life after birth, what he had now was irreplaceable which made the thought of losing it all the scarier.

But then what? He asked himself. I can wonder all I want but I still don’t know how to grow.

He looked at the other spirits flooding the house, using Thera’s mana to grow their numbers and replenish their supplies but knew they wouldn’t be able to help him. While some of the new varieties of spirits might have needed a bit more experience to fully develop into who they were, his problem was a mortal one despite not being such a thing himself which made it all of the harder to solve.

I wish I’d just been born a mortal. He thought sadly. Then I wouldn’t have these problems.

But why wish for what could never happen? It was what he tried to tell himself at least, he knew his nature was unchangeable but still the thought kept coming back. If he was mortal then sure, there’d be plenty of unfortunate things he’d have to deal with. He’d have to eat and he’d have to sleep, he’d have to deal with what was sure to be a number of less obvious biological needs and he’d probably experience physical pain too which admittedly looked rather unpleasant when he thought back to the various examples of it he’d seen but he’d also stop being limited by what he was.

Despite what seemed like only drawbacks he felt himself long for it, an existence he could never have, at least until the point where his two different natures met offered a solution. He might not be able to become mortal but wasn’t there an option he could take that would be close enough?

It was something that barely fell within his realm of power, the only question was to the degree he could make it work but just the thought alone was making him excited as he started consulting the system, asking it questions and taking its answers, trying to figure out how to turn the idea into reality.

After all, it in a sense already controlled the biology of the planet, allowing levels of hybridization that could have never occurred in nature. His very existence was a testament to that but as surprising as he was to the original great spirits, he considered two other examples to be far more curious.

Both Thera and Seren were hybrids of a higher order, mixing matter and mana in a way that seemed impossible to achieve and the details of just how it had been done were recorded within the system itself, only waiting to be accessed as Mora processed the information, feeling surprised himself by the end.

“So that’s how it managed it? I’m not sure I really understand but if it works… Well, I should be able to too, right?”

He spent only a little longer thinking it over, wanting to be sure he had the details right before he finally got up and, not bothering to use the door, walked to Thera and Ben’s room through the wall between them, watching the two as they slept.

A part of him wondered if he should wait for them to wake up first and talk about it but a larger part thought it was fine. After all, Thera had said to ask them if he was ever unsure about what he was doing but he fully believed it was harmless and besides, he didn’t want to risk them saying no.

I guess I’ll need to get a space spirit’s help after I start but there’s a couple around. Okay, I can do this.

Nervous as he was, the dominant feeling in him was excitement, both for the change and the chance to see how it would turn out as he started gathering what he'd need and casting his spell, giving shape to exactly what he wanted.

It is, and now that you've framed it like this, it makes sense. It was long established that great spirits can do almost anything within their element, that it is capable of, even naturally manifesting it. It would make sense if he was communing with the soul of the system.

Shannon

Ummm are we all just gonna skip past the part where Mora has direct access to the system and is capable of interacting with it? I’m guessing he’s interacting with the dead gods’ souls and that’s how it works but still wild

KhaosEnd

Sounds like you just need to embrace stacking as a routine. I do that myself for everything I read or if it's daily it's only for a short period until I get to a point I feel stacking is fine again (aka not at the worst cliffhanger).

Andre

Stress resistance has awakened to unending divine stress resistance.

Kevin Fowler

I was thinking the same thing. I think this might be the path of Helori's theorized Spirit God. Bare minimum I think he's going to gain full access to use the system to grow like everyone else and be able to get tier 3 skills to ascend. I guess the other question is if that happens Will a new great soul spirit be born? Because if so they could do this procedure to all current great spirits doubling the already insane amount and boosting their power to unseen levels. If the happens the spirits alone could no diff the 3rd wave.

Kevin Fowler

I think I am just going to pause reading this for idk 20 or so chapters. Maybe 50. It feels like a few steps forward are taken and then a lot backwards to compensate. I love the story so please don't think this is hate. It just feels like plot points are thrown into the story to stretch certain bits out as long as possible. This story seems more fun when you can binge a bunch.

Erain

Ben beams every iteration of Pinocchio into Thera's mind and asked politely to share the joke with Mora who doesn't want his mind invaded so Ben makes a movie theater about it so his kid knows exactly how hilarious he is

Corvusamous

"So you said you were my parents so I made you my parents. You adopted me so now I'm adopting you but I'm still the kid."

Corvusamous

Why is everyone jumping to hurting Thera when if anyone was going to get pregnant it's Ben? Like mpreg already exists in this universe whose to say that Mora wouldn't choose Ben/j but also I really hope Mora doesn't create a pattern of overwriting people's bodily autonomy especially after his parents asked him nicely not too earlier and gave him examples of how to ask when anything would affect others/s

Corvusamous

I wonder if this will make a new soul spirit form, or if reincarnation will be the next step in the evolution of spirits, allowing extremely powerful beings to benefit from the job system

Thomas Issa

Is...is mora gonna impregnate himself into thera to become their actual flesh and blood child? I hope that's not where this is going.

Barkeep

Or is he going to graft himself onto Ben, turn him into a part spirit as well?

Carl Mason

So it looks like he's going to create a mortal body based off Ben and Thera's genes, which again leads into his childish decision making. It really is a problem to have power just under a God and not have the correct faculties to utilize it. Now, what are the implications? Will he remain the great soul spirit or will a new one be born? Will he gain parts of Ben's demi-god status like Nati? I think the biggest one, is Will he fully be integrated into the system and allowed to utilize it? Will he have a contender level soul magic or instantly ascend to tier 3? This has so many exciting possibilities that I wish there was a new chapter now lol.

Kevin Fowler

Oh no lmao. I didn't FULLY get it at first. Oh no oh no. Reading your comment twice and then re reading the end bits of the chapter again though it eventually clicked. Now im much less excited about this choice. Or, like, im just as excited but now equally apprehensive. I *thought* he was gonna use the system and pure magic to make his current ghostly mana form into the same form but flesh and bone. I thought he went into Ben and Theras room to discuss it with them, and he wonders about permission and such, so that reinforced me thinking it was about asking if making himself flesh and blood is a good idea. His form that looks like his Great Spirit parents mortal bodies. Now its clear that Mora is using actual DNA from both Ben and Thera to make himself their actual biological child. Shoot. Morraaaaa. Poor kid. Ben's gotta keep a closer (permanent) eye on this kid now that he has the power to do so. Somehow, im sure. God's spy on mortals from their realms. Ben has a realm. Spy on Mora from there.

Emily Gurnavage

I can't find my comment anywhere (app spazzed when I posted) so sorry if anyone else sees double. I can see it now. Turnip manages to fit in a "be a real boy" comment from Mora, Ben cracks up because he gets it, Mora is confused, Thera goes apocalyptic because Ben is "laughing at Mora", and the rest mostly writes itself.

Emily Gurnavage

Oh booboo, bubba, my precious Mora, reeeeeeaaaalllly should've gotten Ben and Thera first. Always have backup for new spells TFTC, I'm really liking the different perspectives every now and then.

Andrew Nichols

We don't have the details yet but probably? Since he needs a space spirit it might be a matter of changing himself fundamentally, splitting his soul, and overlapping the two perfectly? That sounds nearly impossible... I just don't get how that would get him a body so yeah he must be making a body. Unless his soul has access to what a body should be like since his father was a corpse?

Corvusamous

So, Mora wants to become Ben and Thera's actual child?

Carl Mason

That would have been fun if he became the soul to an intricate plant body but Mora doesn't think like a crafter

Corvusamous

Mora is definitely Ben's son lol

Darius Sanguna

Ben bring this child to your godly realm I don't care how. He's getting depressed.

Kevin Neely

I have a feeling that mora is just as crazy as ben

TBONEMAN

Aw man this is gonna be so fucked. Fuck. He can’t just strip people’s bodily autonomy like this… The trauma brain is trauma-ing. Ben wake upppppp!!!!!!

Jumure

Please... Not like this 😑😑😑😑

Alex V

I think this next chapter is gonna be WILD

CALAMITY!

He is getting a space spirit to help so it is teleporting in and out.

TBONEMAN

Poor Thera can't catch a break from her family. At least her stress resistance is about to straight up awaken.

CherMi

Please tell me he isn't going to magically crawl into Terra's womb and be born again! I don't want that nightmare fuel. The other option of stealing both an egg-cell and some sperm is also something not very ethical my boy! Plus you are literally stealing from a "to be GOD" you'll be getting some sacrilege for that!

Alexander Semino

I see that but from my experience this is endemic to childhood. It sounds like the reasoning my five year old uses in a way.

Texan fan of battleships

Who bet he his gonna be thera child in the literal sense

ShyviaAngel

It'd be like two different search engines.

Aloysius

Pinocchio?

CataFlan

I wonder what would happen if Mora and Verbum meet. Verbum has complete system access but no filter. Mora has intuitive system access but little experience. If Ben could mediate a meeting of the minds...

Vorquel

Mora has already been influenced by Ben's ideology about permission.

TheCrazyDuck

I like the idea of the second one. I know Ben said he was actually sleeping but I wonder if he is going to snap awake because of this and maybe even help mora in some way to perfect what he is doing

david kirkup

This connects interestingly to Quox being changed by the vessel he inhabits now.

Luboš Hemala

He is crafting himself a body, right?

Griffus

Well now I am worried...

SacredSteel

Oh Mora, what are you about to do? I see two potential options. Option one: Maura is going to materialize and then occupy a physical form for himself altering his soul to cause it to become his actual body and become mortal. Option two: the more concerning one. He is going to use the system to take information on Thera and Ben to fabricate a body which is essentially their child and implant his soul into that to literally become their mortal child sort of
