“No.”

“Um, no?”

“That’s right,” Thera told him. “No matter what notification went off in your head to make your eyes light up like that, you’re not allowed to look so happy when you currently don’t have a heart.”

“...Okay, but in my defense they were really good.”

“I’m sure,” She said dryly. “You can tell me all about them after you have something proper beating in your chest but for now teach Jake all of the healing spells you can in a quick break and then we’re rushing through the rest of this as fast as possible so you can do whatever crazy thing you’re planning on.”

“Alright, yeah, sounds good. Jake, your brain is with me.”

He pulled a circlet from one of his rings and tossed it to the other man, with a grimace being the reward for it.

“How much is this going to suck?”

“Honestly, a fair bit. It's not to the extent of what I taught you for non-affinitied magic but I really do know a lot on this topic as well.”

Light and life magic, along with the death spells that would intersect with the latter and some other, more esoteric death options as well, but he’d also read countless ways that different affinities could be combined with those two traditional healing types to enhance their effects. Something that Jake, as one of the world’s two archmages, was uniquely capable of taking advantage of.

Not just the expected spells that would come in the form of blessing magic but also far more complex things like managing a patient’s body temperature with fire magic or controlling their breathing with air. Water could be applied to plenty of spells as a way to keep most races from bleeding out from wounds or rebalancing biological systems in the event of illness. Then there was dark to manage pain, space to manage obstructions, time to just give any healer more room to provide treatment and so much more beyond. With the entire history of the planet directing its focus to the present day in the throws of the invasion that had doomed so many past worlds, healing arts had been deeply explored, at least to the best the planet’s technological level had allowed.

Huh, and on top of all of that, since a low form of soul magic exists as proven through the existence of the demons, that means that as a ninth-leveled archmagic holder, Jake should actually be capable of a handful of soul spells as well, shouldn’t he? Okay, that will make the cut for these lessons too. Never know when you’ll run into someone who needs their soul healed after all.

With his friend pulled into his mind for what was going to feel like days of learning ahead, that left Ben’s real body to pull items from his rings to get to work on what he viewed as just as important for everyone. A snack before they went off to the next floor, and with that frame of mind, he began some light cooking.

“Ben, you can’t be serious,” Amy told him in disbelief. “How are you thinking about food right now?”

“Who knows how long the next section is going to be, gotta get a bit in us while we can.”

“You don’t have a heart right now!”

“But I still have a stomach, what’s your point?”

“The fact that you’re so relaxed is deeply uncomfortable!”

“Ah, that. Good news for you then, I’m not. You just can’t hear all of the minds in my head being regulated to swearing revenge against the gods for that deeply unfair level design. Speaking of; Nare, we’re having a long talk about how that was even possible when I get out of here!” He yelled at the ceiling, getting no response but at the very least felt confident the god heard him. “This stupid place is supposed to be a test of skill, not luck!”

“...On the right track but I’m still not sure that’s really the right reaction,” She muttered.

“I don’t think there’s one correct reaction to that.”

“Okay, but you’re definitely proving there’s a wrong one.”

“Hurtful.”

“And just what do you plan on replacing your heart with instead of having a new one grown?” Vasta asked, adding her own thoughts and getting a few moments of silence before Ben gave any sort of answer.

“In the spirit of not overcomplicating my life until it’s too late for anyone to try to stop me, I can’t say.”

“Oh yeah, that’s so reassuring,” Amy told him with a roll of her eyes. “Why?”

“It’s complicated. I can show you when it’s happening if you want. Trust me, it will be great.”

The gods had only just gotten in his way when it came to finishing his jobs and even if he’d worked it out somewhat with them in the end, he was going to give them no room to interfere again if any of them so desired. There’d be no explaining what he had planned until it was too late to stop him, with the only priority to getting there being to finish the tower first as he was left wondering just how bad it might be.

On the one hand, objectively, he should have had an easy time with the first floor than he’d gotten. He could think faster than any attack would come and once he’d figured out the gimmick of it, getting through it had been simple. If that was the case there really was no reason to worry too deeply about anything else.

Except he also knew from past experiences that how hard any tower would be could vary wildly in quality, meaning the level of challenge wasn’t necessarily going to be consistent, and even worse than that was how the trials he’d had to face had broken for him before.

Both trapping him in an in-between place from the transition of the rest area to the actual floor itself or leaving him fully conscious in a torturous experience where he should have by all accounts been knocked out, there was always room for them to go wrong around him, with the structure of his mind being enough to confuse some of the building’s functions.

…But I can’t plan for that so I’m stuck hoping for the best. He sighed to himself, feeling that thought firmly stuck in his head as he finished cooking and handed out bowls to the rest of them. Which means I just need to be aware of it and plan for the best. If I get stuck between floors again I should be able to repeat what I did last time to get out and if a mind effect doesn’t properly activate for me… Well, maybe I can cross my fingers and hope that whatever’s going to go wrong will actually work in my favour a bit. That could happen, right?

It was a nice thought at least, no matter how unlikely it felt but after an hour passed and Jake was freed from his mind it was time to go on, with the five of them standing in front of the door to the next trial, ready to go in.

Didn't it also adapt him to chaos? There was something about it when he looked at it with Aknashic Record

Rauva

Not really all it did was give him knowledge it's not like he changed his body

Isiah Debarros

I mean his "weakness" against Ouan is that he is so much weaker as a being then he can barely move in him presence.

Isiah Debarros

I mean a lot of them like getting in his way when he is trying to strengthen himself

Isiah Debarros

Okay, that. She didn't get any flesh off him. She just kept sucking him up to chew on a bit, ineffectively. It says so in-chapter: "finally catching and eating them, only for them to pop away thanks to their magic soon after"

Carl Mason

Wouldn't witness of chaos fix that?

Rauva

The problem with that is the outsiders body was anathema to the natural world and took constant damage by existing. I don’t think a Heart woven of his flesh would work very well.

Mister Cakers

I think he mostly doesn't say it because his God would try to stop him because the skills involved and the other gods have tried to interfere with his stuff in the past so there's also that but like the real reason is so we don't find out what is going on

Isiah Debarros

Ya I don't think they're on speaking terms

Isiah Debarros

Ch688

Atila M

When did this happen? I remember she ate some Ben, i do not remember her eating ...the other one, Jackass, him.

Carl Mason

Not so sure when the tier 3 cannibal try to eat him she succeed to reap so.e flesh

Atila M

Given the reference to when he was incorrectly teleported in a previous trial, it seems to be something similar. Though it could still be interference. I do think Ben would have to kill multiple gods to awaken sacrilege that way though... it's probably more likely for him to awaken it through other (new) sacrilegious activities

Cole Armstrong

so the damage wast luck right? a god interfered and we're unlocking sacrelige

Techy

They do have a Great Life Spirit. And from the last time they transplanted organs into Ben they will need her help now too.

Rauva

People keep saying this, but the outsider body was huge, so a direct organ transplant is not workable, and I don't know how it would work to form a heart out of outsider flesh. The heart is a different type of tissue, even the muscle isn't just generic muscle. I don't see how that would work.

Carl Mason

How? He is currently imprisoned in the space stone at the bottom of the ocean. And when he gets out, he has Absolute Defense and is impervious. Not that it is a bad idea, just infeasible.

Carl Mason

Innux needs that though...

Corvusamous

That would be awesome. It avoids the god soul slipping into him, probably

Corvusamous

The same reason they interfered with his quest and then didn’t let him do it until he shared. There’s a faction that just doesn’t want him getting stronger.

Silverias

I wonder if he could get Vividus to manipulate some of the fruit off of the trees imbued with god souls into a functioning heart? make himself into a god-flesh chimera?

Markopolo

Or summoning Ather from the Infinite Hells and taking his heart?

Black Esper

Why would the gods want to interfere? Unless he uses somethig very sacrilegous...? I hope he doesn't plan to shove a god soul in there?

Luboš Hemala

At this point in the story I would prefer 2 chapters a week. I want the story to feel awesome, even to reread. Less stress and more content that way.

Luboš Hemala

I think the session was focused on non-affinity magic since Jake needed a level to it?

Luboš Hemala

Lets face it: his idea has to be truly insane to warrant this amount of caution at this point in time. He can already get away with practically everything, hence his idea has to be bonkers and or HIGHLY sacrilegious.

Michigo

How would he take the heart? Ben can't hurt him. Like seriously, not a scratch, not a wound, can't steal any organs. The immortal guy is **immune** to being physical harmed.

Nematrec

I believe both work. Bla should have been easy, or easier (than it was).

Michigo

My hope for the heart is he works with Thera to design a chimeric one. Maybe this would transition demonic body and cover a weakness against Ouan

Corvusamous

Logan

İs Ben planning to use the heart of that artificial being from way back ? I can't think of any other one he might be thinking off. Either that or he was going to use the outsider flesh ...

SacredSteel

Why not taking the heart of the immortal tier 3 ?(I doubt that the satyr really need one or cannot regrow one) I doubt the safety of using God soul crystal or outsider material to replace his heart.

Atila M

The possibilities of what Ben plans to put in his chest are fun to think about, it is a bit concerning that he doesn't want to say what he is going to go though.

TheCrazyDuck

On the one hand, objectively, he should have had an easy time with the first floor than he’d gotten *easier

Alex

I'm pretty sure he only got the lower tier soul magic spells recently because he wasn't looking into the memories of demons all that often and before

Isiah Debarros

Ya a week of magic teaching that isn't focused on healing isn't gonna really guarantee that Jake would be good at it

Isiah Debarros

I know this is always a problem with daily posters but a short convo that covers nothing new and a training montage that happens in seconds off screen is somewhat of a letdown of a chapter.

Evan Cathey

He only did that specifically for non-affinity spells, so Jake could get one last level in that skill before the tower. Also, he gave him a few days (perceived time) throughout a handful of minutes (real time) of general magic education back when Thera did her mass growing of training homunculi roughly a hundred chapters ago.

max grok

He only teached non-affinity magic to lvl non-affinity magic

CataFlan

I mean, if he wants to live forever, all he needs to do is create more bodies for himself and make it so that his soul can really become one with those bodies like if his current body has like a lifespan that shorter than her, he just needs to figure out how to abandon it and then occupy a different vessel, which would seem like a lot, but he has skills that would probably make it easy if he worked at it for a considerable amount of time

Isiah Debarros

TFTC!

CataFlan

That’d be interesting, someone also pointed out him using the outsider heart which i think is a lil much but it would certainly be cool

Moatdog

They're also too cheap to descend unless something big is happening

Isiah Debarros

They would never allow him to do that

Isiah Debarros

I was thinking a bit bigger about trying to get a heart with some essence from his godly demon plants or something. Get a two for one on demonic body and sacrilege.

Dotakiin

Actually my other thought was killing a gods avatar and using that heart to get stronger and awaken his sacrilege.

J H

He's gonna use the outsider body isn't he?

Rauva

Agreed. Also might awaken a soul magic affinity. Or a soul magic resistance. Either would be useful

J H

This chapter felt like filler for you to reach chapter 800. There was some dialog and it just went over his thoughts. Thank you for the chapter though!!

Sylas Varga

To be honest, if anything is going to fix that issue, it is that skill because his cell run on mana the idea that his lifespan isn't affected would be weird

Isiah Debarros

I mean, there's probably a difference between him, teaching him a bunch of stuff that would be useful for him in the equivalent of a week in his mind and Jake can leave whenever he wants to him teach teaching everything he knows about healing without Jake running away

Isiah Debarros

Didn't Ben already download all of his magic and spell knowledge into Jake earlier on when he was force-teaching him stuff? Like a week ago or something? Or did he only do that on a relatively high level, and now he went into more detail on healing specifically? If there's still stuff on magic and spells he hasn't somehow already forcibly downloaded into Jake's brain he really should do so since literally all of it can be used by Jake with his OP magic skills. Also surprising he didn't think of teaching him soul spells before. Those are both useful and worth tons of XP to level his skills. I get that he's saving materializing souls for after they get their levels in the towers to try to awaken their skills, but regular soul spells should be great for normal leveling.

J H

My guess is that he’ll cram a demon heart in there and awaken demon body, who knows maybe it’ll solve the lifespan issue between him and thera but i doubt it

Moatdog

Yay
